Clunking noise from suspension going over bumps, but not when turning at low speed. No noticeable play in the wheel when car is jacked up. Since it is only from the up & down movement I am thinking struts rather than tie rod/sway bars (?) Anyone have this same situation?

I've got the same issue with the rear of the car. Springs are sagging and struts are clunking over bumps. Front end still feels like new. Since you checked for play in the steering, probably unrelated to tie rods. Could also be the SFBs making some noise as well. To cure my problems, I've found the best deal for Eibach/Tokico's at shox.com However, the rear Tokico's are out of stock and on back order till mid-month.

Let me know if that cures your problem!

You didn't say front or back. Check the rubber on the front upper strut bracket for tears and if the strut is still centered in the bracket. You can check it from the engine compartment by taking off the plastic caps that cover the top of the strut towers. These are a $26 part from Ford. If they are worn out, they will definitely cause a clunk over bumps.

Also, the sway bar endlinks may be the culprit.

I had this problem until I used Loctite. The nuts on the sway bar end links come loose. Whether or not the car is jacked up there is tension on the endlinks and movement is difficult to detect. The knocking or rattling sound is VERY detectible and annoying. Duplicating the bumps that generate the sound is also difficult. It doesn't take much, just a thread turn or so on the nut. I would check the endlinks before spending any money on new parts.

I had the same problem and someone on here told me it could be the rear sway bar busings. I bought a set of bushing brackets with with greasabele bushing inserts and that solved my problem. I have also been told it could be the rear sway bar link bushings.
