After starting the car, I hear clicking noises behind the Climate Control Cluster on the instrument panel like something is trying to turn on (a relay?). Clicking can go on for 30 seconds.

Then after the clicking stops, I hear a whining noise that decreases in frequency and volume as it stops. Total on-time for whining noise is 5 seconds.

When this is all over, sometimes the heat will come on at the defroster location at the windshield.

Just recently, the climate control buttons won't work and the temperatures (outside or setting) won't illuminate in that little window.

Haven't used the AC in years because don't have money to fix it right now (don't really miss it).

I just blow hot air from A/C setting but it may just be refrigerant is gone or many other leaks /problems. I've never had any trouble with the car mechanically or with the engine all during this time that can be traced to the A/C. Just "normal" SHO troubleshooting.

SHO is '89, 275,000 mi., stock.

It's just a pain when the heat comes on at random times.

Then it will stop at some random time later - 10 minutes, 1/2 hr ...

Can you advise?

If your fan has a mind of it's own, and will blow heat thru the defroster vents, Then you probably have a bad VBCM - Variable Blower Control Module.

It sits behind your glove box and is very susceptable to moisture, or in humid environments.

I know that I fought with the same thing for like 2 years before I finally fixed it. The problem with mine was the blower door actuator motor. It's what opens and closes to let either hot or cool air in. It was a constant click behing the center of the dash until the motor finally killed itself. The part is the least of your worries. You can get it for less than $100 just about anywhere. The problem is, you have to rip your whole dash off to replace it and even with the dash off it's not the most easy thing to remove and replace. Good luck with it. SHOtimes has a detailed breakdown of the process. Here is a link if you're interested... http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0&sid=142

Many Thanks!!!!!! thumb

Yeah, I knew I would have to tackle the dash sooner or later. headbang headbang

That's about the only place I haven't got my hands into yet. Oh, well, I'll just sit down and do some deep breathing exercises and remove any knives, sledgehammers, sharp instruments, etc. in the vicinity of working on it. :D

But I love my SHO. Who wouldn't?

I love it when the drivers of those ricemobiles (with all that aftermarket ******** on them) look at me when we're side by side stopped. Next time I look at them, they are shrinking in size in my rear view mirror. finger :p finger
