I opened my air box the other day (just doing a little exploring while TRYING to remove the silencer cone) 1st, my box is really dirty. . .should I clean it with like a paper towel and a little Simple Green or Windex? or should I suck it out with a Shop Vac? and also what is the best way to clean the paper filter itself? Hopefully I can get the Silencer Cone out either today when I get it back (Water Pump replacement-- got it for 70 bux , haha can;t beat that) or tommorow. . .

Thanks for all your help.

Shop vac will work fine to clean out the debris that gets collected in the airbox. If you use any liquid cleaners, just be sure to get it dry before re-starting. Paper filters are not designed to be cleaned. However, if you're trying to get some of the loose dirt off, just shake it out.

as for cleaning the box its fine, but watch for the air temp sensor near the bottom. Also dont clean your paper unit get a new on or get a K&N that you can clean.

Clean a paper filter? I don't believe that I have ever heard that before. For about $5, just install a new one or spend the extra $35 and install a K&N.

Both!

You don't clean paper filters, you throw them away. Best bet is to buy a K&N Panel filter for $40-$50. It is well worth the money and reuseable.

Man! I thought my dad was the only guy to clean a paper filter!

You can use an air-compressor to "clean" the filter. You should be aware that when you do this, you do remove some surface dirt, but can you tell if you are making some of the pores in the filter larger? I know money gets tight. I'm fairly certain we've all been there before. Yet, I think it would be silly, given the small price of another paper filter.

The wisdom of choosing whether or not to get a K&N filter could very well depend on the road conditions that you drive through on a regular basis. I wouldn't recommend it on a dirty/dusty road. The extra oil you would use to trap the extra dirt would probably turn exponential at some point. If it's clean driving, no problem. You may expect a couple of extra horsepower; not sure what you'd use it for, however. How long do you expect to own your car? If less than ten years, buy a paper filter.

Of course, most of the folks in here swear by K&N! I've seen the demonstrations at O'Reilly's. The fan blows the ping-pong ball up to the top of a vertical tube. The Fram filter barely moves it. But, how many more particles get through the filter (if any) , and how much of an issue is it(if particles get in)?

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Napa Gold, changed yearly.
Be hard pressed to see a K&N get you any more horsepower in a stock application than one of these, and you know your air is being filtered properly. (Although, K&N's filter great when installed and oiled properly).

I wouldn't bother cleaning a paper filter..they're relatively cheap, and you risk damaging a filter not designed to be cleaned in the first place. If anything, just tap some of the loose dirt out.

Lol, my dad too! He would blow them out if he had an air compressor, but he doesn't so he just taps them out. I just shake my head when he does this with his work truck air filters that have like 60,000 miles on them. He operates those vehicles in EXTREMELY dusty conditions. Last time he was like, "What? It's better than it was". Come on dad, just buy a new filter already. He used to be better about those sorts of things. Maybe he just likes buying new trucks and giving the broken ones to me to deal with, I don't know. shrug
