Buy a used alpine on craigslist. I got a alpine cda 9886 with the pxa-100 audio processor for 100 bucks.
That's a **** of a steal but if you are patient you can find simalar deals. Why not get the most bang for your buck?
Id buy eclipse, alpine or pioneer. You can't go wrong with any of them. Preferably alpine though.

choice of radios...

You know...when choosing a new head unit, the "typical brands" are pretty much all the same. It is what you prefer in a brand! I am a HUGE Sony ES lover... Does that mean Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine, JVC, Eclipse, and Clarion suck...no...its my preference... I saw someone say that Sony made bad car stereo's, according to whom? It is all personal opinion! You can find alot of good head units for around $100.00 Just my $.02...

For some reason it's an important function to me to be able to eject a cd with the car off. JVC allows this (I've had about 4 of them) my one kenwood will do it for about 10 minutes after the car is off, and pioneers do not allow this. So, it's true, it comes down to how the menus operate, if the lights match your dash lights at all, and other little usability things. I hate my old kenwood because if you push in on the volume **** you're changing the bass and treble settings, which is very easy to do accidently if you're touching the **** when driving down a less then smooth road.
