i know this seems like a stupid question but i just want to be sure before i get started.

i plan on changing the transaxels on my sho this weekend and i read the haynes repair manual to get an idea of what i need to do. the haynes manual covers the regular ford taurus but not the sho. does that matter...would the cv joints and transaxels be different, or can i use the haynes manual as a guide.
thanks for the help.

Go Ahead and use the Haynes.

There is no difference in the service procedures for replacing the axles in an SHO and any MTX-III equipped SLO.

SEARCH here also, there are plenty of posts describing how to replace the axles.

ROB 4 SHO,

There is nothing wrong with the Haynes manuals. They are not intended to be a replacement for a factory service manual. They are intended for the do-it-yourselfer as a guide to doing basic repairs and maintainence.

The Haynes walks you through a repair job step by step with pictures. They also have the torque specifications you need.

The Haynes does not have the detail that the Helm Shop Manual has, but it does not cost as much either ($90 vrs. $15). Most of the Haynes manuals I have seen do show you how to remove and replace the transaxel. If yours does, use it. rangerj

Speedy,

You make a good point. After re-reading the original post, I am not sure whether he is changing the axels or the whole transaxel. Either way, the Haynes is a useful referrence source. rangerj

There will almost certainly be a few differences from what is in the haynes manual(since it doesn't cover the sho), how many would depend on if you have a manual, or automatic. Regardless, the haynes would still give you a good idea of whats involved, if not an exact step by step procedure.

For the half-shafts, the passenger side of the MTX's connects into a bearing, and then another shaft goes from there to the tranny, the Chilton repair manual I have says to unbolt that intermediate bearing and then pull the whole thing out together.

The half-shafts for the atx should theoretically be the same(at least the removal process) since it is the same basic tranny. :)

I think I remeber seeing a few posts related to removal of the tranny, not entirely certain where though. shrug I want to say it was when I was doing a search about subframe bushings.

Good Luck though, thumb hope everything goes well, I'm planning on doing the same thing to my 93' sable(3.8 liter headgasket eating abortion of an engineering job boink , but as my first car, I just can't let it die! headbang )
