I put this first in the wrong forum, but its now in the right place.

Is it recommended to change the oil filter by loosening the filter and letting the oil drain all over the starter? Is there a procedure for changing the oil filter? This seems like it could cause problems later if the oil penetrates the starter.

Thanks.

Most of us drape a plastic bag (grocery bag) over the starter to keep the oil off of it. Unfortunately, due to Ford's ingenious packaging, there is no way around dumping oil on top of the starter area, the best you can do is cover it up to keep the oil off.

I cut a washer fluid jug to fit over the starter it works well. I guess you could also punch a little hole in the oil filter at the farthest point from the starter and let the oil drain out before you remove it.

The above are great ways to prevent oil on the starter... Another thing that works in conjunction with the above would be to poke a hole in the filter to drain most of the oil out of it.
