I have a 92 mts with 147K I've had the car for about a year. since i've had the car the only problem i have noticed is that smoke would come out the exhaust only after driving and coming to a stop a **** of smoke would come out the exhaust. It smells like burning oil, and it seemed to only happen on hot days in the winter time i havent seen any smoke come out the tail pipe. now my other problem is my y-pipe cracked a couple of weeks ago, I removed it, looked inside and noticed the honey comb was missing from both cats. the kid i got the car from said it was a sho shop y-pipe. i was wondering if the smoke coming from the exhaust could be from the honey comb breaking up and being pushed out the exhaust, or another issue. 60k was done and this car has been taken care of very well. any input would be appreciated. thanks.

Is there an oily film on the back bumper that you would see by swiping a white cloth across it.
Does it use a measurable amount of oil between oil changes?
Forget about the missing honeycomb for now.
Where does the needle on the heat gauge ride?
Any new plugs or wires lately?

no residue on back bumper, but the tips on the car are facing the ground. the temp gauge is normal it sits between the L and the A and if sitting in traffic the needle raises but no where near over heating. there were new plugs and wires installed when 60k was done, taylor wires and autolite plugs. as for using oil a qt or 2 between changes, one time did it use a lot of oil in one drive about 30 miles doing about 90 mph burning about 3 qts but that was a year ago and before i did the 60k, a couple of months ago i drove about three hundred miles and if there was any oil that was burnt up it was very minimal.

I would agree with itwonder about the plugwells. it will smoke here and there. If you get on it it will create more of a vacuum and suck the oil in easier. especially the warmer it gets because oil gets thinner in the summer than apposed to winter so it seeps down the threads of the plugs easier. I had the same prob on my 89.

theres no oil in the plug wells, the gaskets and plug well seals have not even 10k on them, i did have a bad oil leak cause i rolled the rear valve cover putting it on but i fixed that. It doesnt burn a hole lot of oil not, where im concerned about driving it, I was just inquiring. I think my piston rings are either worn or sticking. Im planning on doing the rod bearing, and was thinking of taking the heads off and cleaning everything up I have a couple of months before i have to drive the car. thanks for the reply

I dont think there is oil in the plug wells but i will check just to be shore. the smoke from the tail pipe is wierd to explain. when im driving its fine, when im coming to a complete stop going into neutral there is a puff of smoke that comes out the exhaust smells just like burning oil. was told it is probably blow by. If i have the time to fix it like i do now i would like to do it right. thanks for replys
