I did that on my truck, left the hood cracked open a bit and took it down a side road so I could watch the gauge as I drove.
This could be a total stab in the dark, but I was having very similar problems and it ended up being a connector, the one going into the dis. The tabs were gone and it seemed like when the car was hot it'd work its way out just enough, then when it cooled off it worked okay.
It still idled funny, so I cleaned the MAF and the IAC and it seems to work fine now.

Anyone second this? I asked about it either earlier in this thread or another and noone really suggested it. I think its more of a manual (5spd) issue than automatic? Thats just what i've taken from it. Also what kind of truck do you have?

Also, the might be an intermittant ground fault Do some wiggle testing with the car running. Its free and you might just find the problem.

Sorry to keep this thread open for so long. I'm going to attempt to change the CPS this weekend. But i have a question regarding that; if the CPS shorts out and causes the car to stall because water is dripping on it from the water pump....then can't you just get some heat shrink wrap and surround the CPS to keep it dry?

No, you get another water pump. How many miles since the timing belt has been changed? If you need these two items might as well make it a clean sweep if the belt is old.

My car (93 atx) was dying intermittently like yours. Would be ok if it was cool in the morning and if the tank was more than half full. My fuel pump started the spaceship whine about 2 months ago (louder than normal, you can and should always be able to hear them if your listen, but when they get louder they are going out) anyway, car was really unreliable to drive more than 4 or 5 miles at a time anywhere eventually, even with a full tank. So I bought a new pump and strainer from the local auto parts store.
I chose the route of cutting the floor (no way I wanted to drop the tank) I did so. It was actually pretty easy. Now what I did -DONT DO - I have next to zero patience, so I used my cut off grinder to cut the floor pan. Took about 10-15 mins to cut the rectangle 'access door' there are alot of sparks. This, in retrospect, was obviously very dangerous, my tank was full too. But it was quick and nothing bad happened (although Im sure another of my 9 lives has been cashed in) the proceedures to follow on this forum with the pictures were easy, straight forward and very useful. The whole job took me about an hour and half. I still havent got the rear seat back in yet cause I decided while I have nearly everything out from the back to run my own independent audio cables. I mounted my box with 3 10" subs and amps all under the rear deck, removed all the ford stuff but kept all the wire harnesses etc inplace.
Now the car runs great and as soon as a few more pennies are saved I will buy the alpine HU I want and simply hook up the rca's, remote turn on and hook into 12v pos and constant and ground and away I go.
I'd bet it's your pump. Mine was infuriating as to it's inconsistency and when it would die. It does progressively get worse too. Meaning it will stall/die more often and sooner than before.
Good luck.

maybe 20k since its been changed. when i had my water pump changed that was something else that was done. Im just hoping now that its not a fuel pump problem. i just bought a CPS and plan on tearing the engine apart tomorrow. I'm pretty sure i already past the point of no return

Well so far so good. I replaced the CPS and it hasn't stalled yet....I'm still waiting on a real long trip on a real hot day to be the test

Try pulling the spark plugs one by one and check their condition, also whens the lsat time you have had your fuel filter changed, and if worts comes to worst check the cam position sensor

Done done and done. Well fuel filter was changed this year so about less than 1000 miles ago. Spark plugs were done last year. But i haven't checked the cam. That doesn't seem to be the problem. A bad cam would run rough i've heard, my car just stalled. But the problem seems to be fixed so as long as it doesn't stall again, this thread can be closed
