Well my car is becoming a real pile... I just got my new rims on. Now the car shakes violently above 60mph. Not like a slight imbalance, a BIG shaking. I thought the rims were rubbing. They're not. Maybe the tire place didn't balance the tires? Could a stuck rear brake cause this? Any Ideas on what else could cause this?

If it's aftermarket rims, I say check the inside edge where it meets the hub. And when you were tighting the bolts did you use cross hatch pattern?

When you installed the new rims, did the rims have the correct hub centric rings installed ?

Ahh you know I don't think I had hub centric rings. I didn't think they were needed. I think the place that installed them screwed up, but I'll go to a palce I trust and have them check it.

Hub centric rings only help for the installation of the wheel. The conical seat on the lug nuts centers the wheel. I worked at sears auto center for 4 years and installed many custom wheels. Some had the rings with the kit, others didn't. If the wheels are balanced correctly and the tires are installed properly on them, you shouldn't get any vibration.

Plus, those rings suck anyway, they melt under severe (i.e.-track) use, and depending on their thickness, many crack after rust and corrosion build up underneath them.

Just my $0.02 :)

Do they shake at high speed? Low speed?, when you apply the brakes? A tire out of balance would not produce a violent shake unless it has a defect in it, or you have a badly bent wheel. I would take a look to see if the mounting pad of the wheel is flush with the hub (if you can see through the wheel), if it is, remove the wheel and check if there is a rust buildup on the hub itself. I don't remember if our cars come with the clip that is on some of the wheel stud to hold the rotor on during assembly. If that clip is on...it must be removed. It could be as simple as the person who balanced them did it very incorrect. Good luck.

Thanks guys. From 0-50 the car is smooth, but from 50-75 it gets real shaky. I'm going to have a tire place check everything today... hopefully they have the tool to remove the special lug nuts because I forgot the tool in Iowa :bonk:

I'll keep this thread updated.

It's a tire out of balance. And you probably will not be able to get it balanced at any tire store regardless of the equipment they have. Only a trial and error on the car balance will fix the problem short of new rims or tires.

Were the rims true? What kind of tires? Were they new?

Well if there was no hint of this before the new rims and tires then either something was damaged or a tire is bad. Just because a tire is new and has been balanced with typical equipment does not mean that all is good.

I probably spent $200 on getting my Kumho Ecstas balanced and never get get it acceptable until I did it in my driveway with the wheel on the front, jacked up and running at 35 mph ala George Fourchy.

Your wheels are most likely out of balance.

There should be a maximum of two adhesive weights on each rim. If the weights required are very heavy, they may be split. Many places will use clip ons or strip weights. These are poor choices and a proper balance will not be acheived.

It sounds stupid, but go to a dealership. They tend to have the proper, up to date equipment and weight styles required to properly balance your new rims.

I can't tell you how many Porsches roll in from Town Fair Tire or Sears down the street with the owners complaining of a shimmy or vibration. They just don't have the right machine or weights and cannot possibly balance the wheels properly.

So you mean the DSP road force balancer in my stores was a waste of money????? That's funny.....I seem to be able to correct imabalance problems in my shop. It is gonna take someone who will take the time to balance the tires correctly. If you do not have a quality tire on the wheel or a wheel that is out of round, there would be another issue. Beleive it or not, sometimes the "tuner" style lugs do not have enough surface area and could cause a vibration problem also, but that is in small cases. At the speeds you are describing, I would guess your tires are out at least .50 ounce out. Good luck :thumb: .

Thanks for the replies. When turning even a little bit the vibration goes mostly away. I am having them checked out tomorrow.
