OK here we go, I know I've been posting a ton about my stupid capacitor and you are all probably sick of hearing it...But assuming i have hooked it up properly, why would my lights dim as much as when I didn't have it installed??? The battery looks stock...114k....any thoughts??

ok, i haven't seen anything about your cap problems, soo is your battery dying? is your alternator crap? and did you preload the cap before you ran the system?

To start, yes, I did preload the cap before installation, but at the time, I didn't have a voltmeter and was feeling impatient so I just guessed. After hooking it up, the voltage read the same as my battery, 12.3. I'm not sure about the alternator/battery dying, but even if they were, wouldn't the cap make somewhat of a difference in the dimming or no? Another thing, how do i tell if either one is dying...I can look at both and I'll tell ya they definatly are original...thanks.

take the alternator and battery out, take them to the parts store and they should test them for you, the autozone by me does it, it takes about an hour, luckily there is a McDonalds across the street to pass the time, their play land is great

lol, j/k

my stereo sponsor/shop owner just had me hook me use an interior light to preload the cap, when the light goes out that means there if no more power going to the cap and that its full, so you don't need a voltage tester, just so ya know. if it was the battery or alternator, it might help, but not much, it won't hold enough of a charge to run the car, just to help it out with probably 5 amps. thats just a guess, but depending on what kinda of cap, how many farads, brand, joule capacity, etc. it probably doesn't hold that much of a charge.

If your battery is only reading 12.3 volts with a good meter than your battery is low. It should be at least 12.6 volts. That tells me that either the battery isn't getting charged properly it isn't holding the charge. But I wouldn't blame the battery for light dimming. It could be partially to blame but it's usually an undersized alternator (or worn out alt).

Voltimeter your alternator too... It should read nearly 14 volts. Your alternator may be too weak to charge both the battery and the stereo. Just something to think about.
