so tonight I was driving along and merging on the highway...I was in 2nd....went to give it 3rd and when I did something broke. The shifter only moves up and down and is stuck in 2nd....you can move it to where it LOOKS like it's in 1st or nuetral but it's really only in 2nd, you can't move it side to side at all.

I checked the cables and they are fine, at least the one that is vertical from the tranny is...when you move the shifter front to back it's REALLY rough like it's scraping something and it won't move the bracket at all....but the line is connected to the bracket and tight....and if you get under the car you can move it into either nuetral or 2nd by hand, but even in nuetral the shifter still will not move side to side, and you can't move it to nuetral or back to 2nd via the shifter either. Only nuetral and 2nd, and it has to be done under the car...

So what hapenned? Does my tranny got a few broken goodies inside?

If you got under the car and physically tried to shift it at the transmission and it won't go side to side in neutral, then things aren't looking good for you. Sounds like something broke internally if you can't shift it from neutral.

I'm beginning to wonder if the shift interlock sleeve bolt worked it's way out. IIRC, this will leave you stuck in one gear, or somthing in the likes, if you move the shifter, which you'll have to open the trans casing. Or possibly something on the main shift shaft fork control is jammed/broke.

Any input guys?

The shifter will "not" move side-to-side, by hand or cable. The cable for that was disconnected at the shift bracket, so we could see if that was possibly binded up, if that's possible, but it was operating just fine. When the cable was disconnected, the shifter was moving from side to side, but not the bracket on the tranny. And when you try to put the shifter in 1st, it's like running into a brick wall.

If it's the bolt that worked out, you can try to fix it with out removing the trans, but it'll prolly be a biotch and/or impossible, especially if it broke inside.

You otta look and see if it's there or not. If it's not, well then...your answer. If it is, remove it and see if the bolt has snapped inside where it holds things together.

This bolt takes a 13mm socket to remove. It's located on the front side of the transmission, towards the front bumper, and is awfully close to being by the bottom. There's only 2 bolts that fit the 13mm around there, and it's the lower one with a little ****** around it, which the other one doesn't have.

BTW if this bolt came out, your trans fluid would come out. So if it's there and you remove it, fluid will come out. You can put your finger over the hole to inspect the bolt real quick, then reassemble.

What ever is broke, I have the parts! :thumb:

If there was a problem with the interlock sleeve bolt, that still wouldn't explain why the car stalls out in neutral. But no matter what it is, if it's not shifting properly at the transmission shift shaft (when under the car), you are going to HAVE to remove the transmission to fix it. No sense trying to continue to guess what's wrong. Instead pull the transmission out and apart. I bet you could tell within minutes of looking at the internals of what is wrong.
