Ive searched online, asked best buy and a handful of car audio shops locally. Everyone says it doesnt exist. Where in the heck do you guys find these?

I want to bypass it and just run the speakers off the new head unit but I cant find these.

Any ideas?? :thankyou::omgsho:

It's in the car. Seriously. Hang on while I find the schematic...

Those wires coming off the speaker wires go to this other plug. IT IS WELL HIDDEN. It's way back up behind where the HU goes, and it's a single-row rectangular connector (all 8 pins in a row, so 1x8) that's gray or black (I think gray) and about 2.5" wide. Of course, look for the wire colors specified in the schematic.

What year is your car???

I noticed that the standard Ford stereo connector was just sitting behind the dash of my 93 (near the gauge cluster), but on my 91 they were a little different. The standard Ford connectors were plugged into another harness that converted it to a premium sound connector. So, I disconnected them and then I was able to use the standard connector with my Alpine head unit. Then you have to disconnect the stock amps in the trunk.

He's talking about the AMP bypass. This has nothing to do with the head unit.

The Connectors for AMP for 89-95 SHO's for the AMP that powers the speakers are the same. Whether it's premium sound or not.

Thank you. I remeber seeing that connector hanging there when I did the HU install. I wonder if the wiring harness I bought will plug into that like the others??

If you ask Best Buy, Or anyone of the sort... in there stereo department to order you one, They will.

I did...lol....they had no clue.

Thank you.

I've got one you can have for shipping.

Ill take it!! Is it the one that goes in the trunk??:thankyou:...let me try the harness behind the HU first because I dont wanna take it from you if I dont need it.

I know what he's talking about, but you don't need the bypass if you use the standard plugs.

The amp bypass is hard to find sometimes and expensive. Some places wanted over 25 dollars for the bypass kit. You can get the standard connector at walmart for less than $10.

Yep. remove the stereo and the radio cage. On the left side are two plugs for the stereo. Cars with higher end audio has a loop harness that runs from the deck to the amps then back to these two connectors.

Cars with a standard stereo have these plugs directly into the stereo.

So, buy the standard adapter, unplug the loop harness from the stereo and under-dash connector. Wire up the aftermarket stereo harness to the standard adapter and plug it into the under-dash connector.

I'm bumping this back up as I'm looking to install a Pioneer head unit and am looking for some clarity to the original question.

Right now I have a wire harness that I picked up from Best Buy that splices onto the Pioneer harness, and plugs into the factory harness behind the dash.

I'm hearing talk of buying an aftermarket piece that is hard to find...and also hearing that nothing has to be bought, it's all in manipulating factory pieces???

Anyone have any pics???

Thanks, Mike

It depends on what you are trying to do. The factory Premium and JBL stereos send the signal from the headunit to an amp(s) in the trunk, then to each speaker. The basic stereo sends the signal directly from the headunit to the speakers. If I understand correctly, the plug for the basic stereo is in the dash on cars with Premium/JBL. So if you plan to use the internal amp in your new Pioneer headunit, you just need the aftermarket harness to plug into the basic stereo's plug.

Or you can get the one that plugs into both plugs for the factory amp and bypasses that amp. I think this is the one that people were having trouble finding for some reason. I am using part of this harness in my car to send signal from my aftermarket amp to my door speakers. Not the best solution for me, but it works.

All I want to achieve is to hear music from this Pioneer head unit. Whatever method produces the best sound with the smoothest install...so either bypassing the stock amps or running them is of no matter to me.

I guess it sounds like I'm best off using the Pioneer internal amp. Assuming this, here is the harness for the Pioneer and the adapter harness I picked up from Best Buy. It said on the package it is not intended for use on factory amplified stereos, so can I assume that hooking it up won't power the amp? I'm such an electrical idiot...

Okay, after about 20 tries to upload a photo here through Shoforum, it appears it won't allow me to...awesome.

Anyway, there is a blue/white wire for 12V power that runs from both harnesses...should I wire these together?

You're right on bypassing the factory amp.

I think the blue/white wire is for accessory power. It's normally used to signal a remote amp to turn on.

you can buy a wiring kit from crutchfield.com It comes with the wiring harness for your cd player and the stock amp bypass plug. You stimply unplug the amp and plug the bypass plug into it that it comes with. It's about 20 bucks and very very simple.
