Can the alternator bed bad if Volts light don't light up?

Hello again, the itle pretty much says what i'm trying to find out. The volts light DOES come on during the normal self test of all the warning lights. I'm hopoing just a weak battery. p.s. not my red one, the mocha one I seen at a lot as explained in the engine and stuff category.
