Ok guys I'm thinking about putting together a turbo kit for my SHO this upcoming spring with a turbo from a thunderbird turbo coupe for now. But wanted to see where some of you put your turbo's and what size of turbos you used. Thanks.

There is only 1 well documented turbo SHO at this time. Toolman is the person that you'd want to search for.

1slick1989 is finishing up his install, but he hasn't poster very many pics yet.

There is a third on the forum, though I can't remember his name. He's from NC and the only pics I recall seeing is of the cold charge pipe.

There have been other turbo SHOs, but those are the known ones on the list. You won't find many pictures though. Each kit was custom built for the car it resides in.

Bittersweet was selling a kit... There were pictures on the website.

Is a turbo off of a Turbo T-Bird really a good choice?!?

CNXT0003 the ghetto fix you see there i since replaced with a metal section.

CNXT0001

CNXT0002

it was pretty simple to do... just took alot of thinking on how to make everything fit.

MUCH too small... especially the 87/88 Turbocoupe turbos, as they're the smaller IHI. Keep in mind that the turbofords are only 2.3L and the heads flow like crap. There are two things that require a bigger turbo - displacement and flow. The SHO should be able to handle a pretty big turbo. If you're looking for a JY turbo, then a Holset off of a Dodge truck with a Cummins might be a good choice.

I have a turbonetics 60-1 Hi-Fi with a divided port, tangential, .81 ar turbine housing. I am still testing and tuning my setup, but it drives and makes cool sounds!!! Can't really comment otherwise. pics are on my homepage registered on this forum.

yes. we'll see how it holds up. you have a 3" exhaust too huh. as you see in the pics (maybe??), due to the design I didn't have to neck down the exhaust pipe, post turbo. it's 3" all the way out, that makes for a 12% flow area increase pre/post turbo. now only if I could hear anything...at idle.

It also creates a LOT of volume post-turbo/pre-intake for the turbo to fill.

Id drop the size of the plumbing to 2.5, or even 2.25, simply to reduce overall volume of the system. This would drastically effect (reduce) lag.

Im running 2.25 on my M90 Blower setup, but I am also running a large FMIC.

I had a choice, and I opted for more power over off idle boost. in this instance big pipes mean more power. 'lag' is a 'glass is half empty' term for me anyway, I prefer boost threshold.

Are we talking about exhaust here, or air charge piping? If it's exhaust, then 3" exhaust is perfectly fine, as many people I know run them on turbo 4 cylinders, and it's a big upgrade (I chose open exhaust  )

If we're speaking of aircharge piping, then you're right that it will be less responsive, but the effect is minimal. It really doesn't make the difference that you'd think it does. Having driven a car with 2" piping, and drove it after it had been upgraded to 3" piping the top end was noticeabley better, while the throttle response might have had a little change, but not much.

The Sierra Cosworth RS500 came stock with 3" IC piping.

Im talking about charge piping....

But after looking at the pics again, it doesnt look to be all that long of a pipe. Your typical SC setup has a VERY long charge pipe.

i probably have 15 feet of boost pipes... most of witch are 2.5 inch.... about 4 feet of it is 3" and 3 or 4 feet is 2¼ Lots of plumbing to fill and i get boost pretty much instantly tho i do agree if i went with mostly 2¼ plumbin id get slightly faster boost... but i think like 1slickred89 as to why i used some 3inch plumbin i wanted more off idle power i didnt want to rely on the turbo haveing to spool up before i get that first gulp of air since the bigger pipes hold some air so off idle when you stomp on it you have a lil more to start off with. or atleast thats how i see it in my head. i used the 3" pipes for the 2 sharp 90* turns i figured it would smooth things out a lil on such a sharp turn. but then again i dont know the sciance about all this so i could be way wrong on my thinking but it works for me so i see no problem with runnin bigger boost pipes.

Just my $0.02

oops, I guess I'm dense, I can see how what I wrote could mean the compressor side too. only diff is there is a 56% flow area reduction accost the compressor.

yeah since I posted this I found out the t-bird turbo would be too small. So that sucks I guess I"ll have to look around or just buy a new one and spend a bit more. I"m thinking a GT28RS would work well for a quick spool and descent power level. I'd only be looking for prob 10 psi or so on the stock engine so I don't need a huge one. I may check out that kit on bittersweet sometime see how much it cost. But I normally don't just have that sort of money at once. I'd do better buying stuff a little at a time and piecing it together. Thanks for the opinions. Any more info I can get would be very helpful.
