Am having a baffling series of events since doing 60K service on my '92. When first started to bleed air out of the cooling system, it ran like silk, no issues at all. Next time it refused to start, wth a occasional catch. No fuel pressure, so replaced pump and filter, now it squirts and starts but random severe miss. Rechecked cam alignment and engine ground and both OK . Ran KOEO codes and getting 551 IAC circuit failure, 211 PIP sensor failure, and 214 CID circuit failure. Is there any comonality that might give this, I am unsure f where to go from here. Thanks, Dave

Double or triple check and correct the plug wire routing. The manual has an illustration that is incorrect so if you followed a manual, you've probably got a couple of the wires on the wrong plugs. The correct plug wire routing can be found on this site in the form of a sticky at the top of the engine exhaust driveline section.

If this is your problem, it'll run decent in neutral, but with a backfire or miss.

well, it will never run decent with the pip and cid circuit failure codes.

there are several possibilities - a couple have been mentioned already with double checking all the grounds, etc. - another is that the wiring on the rear of the engine has sagged down onto the exhaust manifold and wires have gotten fried. or the wiring connectors on the rear side of the engine could be dirty or corroded.

so, start by carefully looking over all the engine wiring for damaged wires, melted wires, connector issues, and ground issues. let us know what you find.

That makes sense, connected the main engine ground on the right rear of the intake to the negative battery terminal with a jumper cable, that should have done it if it was ground. Definitely not plug wire outing, it ranperfectly when first started. Does anyone have a drawing of the harness behind the engine, it is a dark jngle there. Thanks, Dave

Still puzzled

Checked wiring and all connectors old codes gone problem still here. Found 6 new Motorcraft double platinums totally soot fouled, so replaced them , improved but idle up and down over 700rpm range and still breaks up over 2.5-3K. Fuel pressure is 30psi at the rail tap. Turning off the pump in the trunk and clearing any excess fuel before leaving it. now have KOEO codes of 111 and 112 relating to charge air temperature, is this the same as the sensor on the air cleaner. Any help is greatly appreciated , I am at my wits end.

I have never seen one of these cars run correctly with a code for intake air temp sensor. you need to figure that one out - check all connections in that circuit and replace sensor if needed.

Problem found

Maybe someone else had this happen, the problem was a bad ignition module that causes a severe random miss, gets worse with every start and badly fouls the plugs with a few seconds of running. Switched the ailing '92 module ontomy healthy '90 and problem followed. four months of pulling ot my hair, down side now I get to buy two more sets of plugs and switch install in both cars. Is any one making a good afford able replacement?

No need to replace the plugs, they will clean themselves up just fine. Get a replacement DIS module from junkyard SHOs and SuperCoupes.

BTW, a poorly grounded DIS will give you almost the same symptoms. All the wiring shields of the cam crank, DIS Module, and PCM ground (pin 40) are grounded at grounding point 104.

Plugs will not clean themselves if the car won't start, read the post. Also problem was same on two different SHOS, one running perfectly, how could that be ground? Never seen plugs so completely soot fouled in a few seconds running.

From what I've seen in the past is that plugs fouling out in a matter of minutes usually means the engine cant breath. Could be plugged up cats. How is or was your exhaust flow out the tail pipes? I had the same problem a couple years back.

Bad DIS

Replaced the DIS with a proven good one, and all of the plugs. Problem solved. All plugs were thick with soot after less than a minute running. Now car is smooth and strong.
