P#- 1213N

While im not stating that you cannot get the cam seals from Ford, I have yet to find any dealer with them. The seals I listed above work flawlessly, and they are $6 a seal... $4 cheaper than Ford seals (if they exsit.. :nut: )

The 1213N seal is a plain steel cased seal, not like the rubber coated steel case found on the original OEM seal. Rubber coated seals are used throughout the SHO engine. That said, the 1213N apparently works, and should be installed using anerobic sealant. The OEM Ford seals can be ordered by any dealer, and most will be able to get them within a day, two days maximum. There is no shipping charge. These seals are the original high quality made in Japan seal that was installed on your SHO engine when it was new. The price is about $10. You can decide for yourself if the few extra dollars are worth it, for me the peace of mind is definitely worth it considering the labor involved in changing a seal. I will use the OEM seals until they are no longer available, and then I'll switch to the 1213N. As for the Felpro seals, they are the correct rubber coated construction, but they are slightly dimensionally different from the OEM seals. On my car, they worked on the front two cam positions, but kept destroying themselves on the rearmost position. The OEM seal fixed that problem. When you install the rubber coated seal, be sure to put a thin coat of RTV around the outer perimeter as instructed in the FSM. Lubricate the sealing surface with grease or assembly ****. Do not let the seal get crooked as it is going in, that can cause a failure.

They allready have an anerobic sealent on them.

And yes rubber coated seals are used throughout the SHO motor... however, how many times have you smelled burning oil from a SHO or find oil in plug wells?

As with anything rubber, in time it will harden and deteriorate. And leak.

On the 1213N, the anaerobic sealant that comes on the seal from the factory sucks, and will leak in short order.

Ask me how I know. :squint:

You'd do well to use your own anaerobic sealant, or to use a quality RTV sealant during installation to prevent future leaks.

How short of time are you talking here? I replaced a set in my buddies ATX atleast 5k ago... and all is well there (no RTV). And mine have been doing just fine, allthough I only have a few hundred miles on them.

The OEM set of camshaft seals is the Fel-Pro TCS45870. I have verified on many occasions the seals installed at the factory are identical to the black rubber covered seals in the Fel-Pro set. The National 1213N seals are coated steel on the outer diameter, but they use the same style of spring loaded rubber on the shaft sealing surface as the Fel-Pro camshaft and crankshaft seals.

My opinion is to use the Fel-Pro set and hold the silicone.

As mush as I respect sdpatt's opinions, I have to say that is risky with what Felpro is shipping today. They fit too loose in the housing, and the FSM recommended RTV is necessary to assure they stay put.

Once again, any dealer can order the Ford OEM cam seal, part number E9DZ-6700-A, and have them in 24-48 hours.
For goodness sake, don't ask them to look it up, just give 'em the number. Or you can order them for a good price at shonutperformance.com and have them in about a week.

On the Felpro seals:

I just installed a set and the middle one got a little crooked. The result was that the rubber surround got damamged and now I have to replace it. They seem to fit fine and all, I just didn't pay close enough attention while installing...Autozone has the Timkin 1213N in stock so I'll be grabbing one of those up tonight to replace the damaged Felpro. I'll be using Loctite Anaerobic Gasket Maker.

Alway's use a thin coat of RTV on the outter portion of the cam seal. The camshaft seal will shoot out if no RTV is used.:thumb:

Some are better at rollin the dice than other's.
I remember Matt's car was fine for 9 miles or so, then the camshaft seal blew out.
