I have been chasing an oil leak, which I though came from the front crankshaft seal, (which I had replaced several months ago), only to find that it was clean.

After cleaning and searching around the engine for a while I found the culprit: the front camshaft seal.

After reading the manual, it says that I have to remove the cams, and use several specialized tools.

Are there any short cuts to this proceedure?

Can the seals be replaced without removing the cams?

The oil leak was traveling down the front of the engine, under the plastic cowls and running over the lip of the oil pan to the transmission. I though that both front and rear crank seals were leaking. I was dreading having to remove the tranny again.

I guess I should have replaced them when I had the engine out.

Good to hear you found the source of the leak.

You only have to remove the camshaft sprockets, not the camshafts themselves, to replace the seals.

Go HERE and scroll down a little bit and you will find the procedure for replacing the cam seals, without any special tools. :)

You do NOT have to take out the cams. All you have to do is take off the timing belt, pulleys, and rear timing belt cover, then they are right at your finger tips. Very easy and simple like the front main if you have everything apart already. thumb I recommend doing all three cams while you have it apart to prevent having to take it apart again. Also, be very careful on the removal of the rear exhaust cam because it is the hardest to get at because of the strut tower and you don't want to scratch the cam. oh

Glad you liked it wink

If you have any questions on changing those seals let me know, I don't know what you're status is on your 60k, but you're going to have it all apart so you might want to go ahead and do the entire front (lower) 60k... shrug

Anyways just shoot me an email. burnout

JD,

That is great page.

If you look at my sig, you'll see that I have done all the maintenance to my engine and tranny when I did the swap.

I had skipped the cam seals because when I read the manual, I thought that I had to remove the cams, and I did not want to get that deep.

I have been documenting the work that I have done to my SHO, but I have not organized the pics like you have. Also as the web page fills up, I have been deleting them, but, anyway, here are the links to my pages.

Today I finished installing the 3 new cam seal. It was a piece of cake.

Again, thanks BDS, Rockledge for the link and JD for the great instructions. I made a short seal installer from the 1 1/2" pvc pipe, and I was able to tap all the seals in with a hammer.

Now I have to button everything up, install my mechanical gauges, SS "Y" pipe, and re-do some wiring. For now...

I still have a ton of stuff left to do to my SHO.

Yes, JD did a nice job on that page. And how about those pics in your gallery ...they are excellent, as well.

The clutch/quaife/tranny photos are particularly insightful. Between what Beth (Bizzy) has been posting lately, and what I've seen from your gallery, I've really been getting quite a nice look deep inside the MTX driveline. thumb

Jose, you sound like you are busy as heck working on your SHO, but when you get a chance you ought to try and add a few of your comments to accompany the pics ...I'm sure a lot of people would be interested to hear (read) about your project, as well. pcorn

Keep up the good work!

(P.S. Do you think maybe I can borrow your tools sometime...? :D )
