What exactly does the cam position sensor control, or help out? I just changed mine because I was advised it was bad but the old one didn't have any oil on the inside of it or anything.... there was oil on the outside of it from the power steering slinging crap everywhere. I just changed the power steering today to cure the problem.

My tach goes buck wild after 4k, I'm trying to resolve this before I have to take it to the mechanic. It doesn't seem like something a cam sensor would cause, or so I wouldn't think. Could sure use more idea's for that. I just cleared my computer and haven't ran it much at all since then. The transmission is out until I get the throw-out bearing sleeve tomorrow. I'd like to be able to cure this ailment before everything is back together.

Who knows maybe the new sensor will fix it, but I have my doubts

The cam sensor (also known as Cylinder ID sensor) does control the tach. It also helps the computer to figure out which plug(s) to fire and when.

A quick search would've given you your answer in less time than it took to make this thread, FYI.

I did a google search that didn't yield any good results... not of the forums, but thankyou for your response.

I found that it helps with timing, which would be the plugs firing, but it didn't really say much about the tach. It was a generic write up on sensors though.

Ya, I meant a search here on the forum. This topic has been covered many, many times.
