Hello,

I recently replaced my alternator and today the O-ring at the end broke. I have two questions:

1. Should I put a new O-ring on the end or is this a complete cable that I can buy from Ford.

2. Why would an O-ring just break? Is this a possible sign that the motor mounts are wearing out? (I have an ATX with 84K on it)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Kevin

I'm sure you can do either. It can break with alot of movement or natural corrosion. I bet you can find a crimp/solder on eyelet for cheap.

This is a common problem with ATX's. The battery cable harness is routed pretty snugly, and engine movement over time can stress the B+ lead ring lug to the point of it loosening or breaking.

You can replace the lug with a suitable equivalent from Home Depot, Radio Shack, etc., but you might also want to release the harness from the lower clamp by the radiator to allow for some extra slack in the cables and just loosely tie-wrap it to prevent it from hitting the A/C pulley.

TSB 94-21-3 covers this very issue, and if you search the forum I believe I've previously linked to a .pdf file of the TSB.
