Another thing people forget is the crap in the ducts. When you turn the AC on do you get a weird smell? That is usually organic matter breaking down in the ducts behind the filter. I remove the filter, leave the lid off, and turn the system on high. This will blow leaves and dirt out. I simply vacuum it up. However, that organic material sitting in there year after year makes the system starting smelling funky. After I get everything out, I open the hood the spray a liberal amount Lysol in both intake ducts while keeping the system running. Yes your car will smell like Lysol for a bit, but it will **** the funk in the ducts.
So that funk you smell for about 10 seconds on start up is usually microbial growth when you smell it in fresh air and recirculated air due to warmth and moist environment the HVAC housing is in. Your lysol is a good trick to **** the growth.
Ford also has a chemical YN-29 that is meant to coat the evaporator and **** that stuff. The down side, you may not get all the foam seals and crevices. The odor will usually come back.
Just changed it. Like a 15 minute job. My 9 year old filter was a bit dirty. No smell so I did not do the Lysol, but I did turn on the blower and shopvaced inside.I would say yes. Because after I removed all the crap behind my cabin filter and Lysol'd the ducts, the smell went away. My ST had it really bad, and I did the same thing and it is gone as well.
Unfortunately not. The SHO is a 5 minute job and requires no tools at all. In my girlfriends Altima the filter is noticeably larger but the opening is not so there is that plus the fact that it is wedged up by the firewall and you have to remove a bunch or screws to get the glove box out before practicing to be a contortionist to get in there.(and i believe the cabin air filter is in the same place in most cars now).
