I found a SHO bumper in the junk yard, and made this out of it:

neonbumper2.jpg

I still need to trim some of the backing plastic to make all of the letters show up. It was way more work than I thought, but it looks sweet I think, although kind of ricey.
PM me if you want info on how to do it.

That would be perfect for after you SHO someone the way. Just flick on the switch and leave em behind knowing they got beat by a Taurus SHO.

Yea, I have to get it painted still when I get the $. I want to have it come on when the secondaries open, but that would be pretty hard because they are vacume activated.

I dont know how applicable it is, but my mechanical systems teacher had an electrical switch last week that was activated by a vacuum. The vacuum would push a diaphram open/close to a contact and turn the switch on and off. I believe its something used in blower motors for furnaces and what not.

I wouldn't imagine it'd be too hard to attach the right kind of switch to the outside of the solenoid that flips the butterflys.

I'll have to look through some of the switches we have at work and see what I can find.

Looks good thumb I've seen it done on a '90 with the same red, only that guy went all the way and passed straight tips out of an extended valence.

Actually the way the VAKS(Vehicle accessory **** system) by Midwest SHO works is by a vacuum switch. You could hit up Mikey Taurus on the forum here and ask where you could a similar swtich to what they use in their kit.

Why not just use a relay to turn the Neon on? If you guys don't remember, the secondaries are first controlled electronically by the EEC. There is an electrical switch that controls the solenoid when you hit 4000 rpm. Use that as your "on" source for your relay, which would then make it close the contacts - which would connect your Neon and 12V when closed.

You guys are making it way too complicated.
The secondaries always open at the same RPM, correct? So just wire it up like a shift light that comes on at that RPM. You can get the modules from Summit or Jeg's or whereever.

OMG, that would be SO AWESOME! Best of luck, and I can't wait to see a video of it or something. Although it's a bit ricey, it'd be excessively cool. Even if a bit cheesey :D

PS:My car is slowly turning into "rice"

You might think twice about hooking your rear neon up to come on when you are accelerating - it might look like a brake light or something if it's red. Hook it up to the brake lights and you can light it up after you pass 'em on the strip.

Any pressure differential switch can be used as long as it covers the proper pressure range. They are used extensivly in HVAC and are not that expensive. Just pipe in the negative side with a "T" and adjust to suit.

I was thinking of doing this exact same think like a year ago, but didn't have the time to do it. That's awesome! Are you going to complete the circut of the neon around the letters? If so, i was wondering how to do it? Good work man!

I am planing on making this slot bigger. I am also swithcing over to a couple of fog lights with brake light covers to shine red, hooked up to the brake lights. The single neon is just not bright enough.

I am working on a write-up with pictures, incase someone else wants to try and is not sure what to do. I will post it when I'm done.

at the back of the intake manifold, there is a switch that gets power from the ECU, which in turn, opens the butterflies. Tap off of that switch and integrate a relay to be on the safe side.

To make sure you have the right switch for teh butterflies, turn your car and and unhook it, you should be able to watch the diaphrams on the butterflies move, you can also hear them open and close.

Kinda like dj sho said. It's a black switch kinda on the underside of the rear plenum dealy, its about 4 inches long and black, kinda like your IAB. A simple 2 wire module, wires are coming from the right side when under the hood. GL

I have plans for my own "4th" bumper brake light, i'm just awaiting for the weather to get nicer, or untill i find a bumper to do it on.... i'll have pics....
