My friends 89 has a broken tranny case how much would it be to fix and can you fix it without having to replace it

How and where is it broken? Might or might not be fixable. 7 book hours to R&R the transmission.

A lot depends on where the case is cracked and how severe the damage is. Small cracks in the aluminum case can sometimes be welded by a good transmission shop, but if the crack is around a mounting point, bellhousing, or a heavily stressed area, replacement is usually the better long-term fix. I'd have it inspected before spending money on repairs—sometimes a used transmission case or donor transmission ends up being the more cost-effective option. Good luck!
