My friends 89 has a broken tranny case how much would it be to fix and can you fix it without having to replace it

A lot depends on where the case is cracked and how severe the damage is. Small cracks in the aluminum case can sometimes be welded by a good transmission shop, but if the crack is around a mounting point, bellhousing, or a heavily stressed area, replacement is usually the better long-term fix. I'd have it inspected before spending money on repairs—sometimes a used transmission case or donor transmission ends up being the more cost-effective option.
