sunny San Juan Bautista,
I was helping a local SHO owner replace his rod bearings yesterday. Damn oil pickup tube studs snapped cry (one snapped, other stripped). There's still some meat left on the studs but decided to call it a night and seek counsel here. Has anybody ever been there and done that? They are removable studs right? Beware folks, I never made it to minimum torque specs as published by Helms. Both my 89 Helms and his 95 Helms had the same specs. jpshakeh

Anyways, we really could use any and all helpful input on this.

edit: Oh, forgot to ask: Does anybody know oil pump pickup tube stud size and thread spec? Don't have the car here to measure.

FWIW, they are the same as the T-Stat housing studs. I was able to find them locally when I had one go (was stretched & hand-tightening with just a socket (no ratchet) snapped it.

Yes, they are removeable studs.

For some reason, M4 comes to mind, but don't quote me. Steal a nut from the t-stat housing & use that to gauge the thread if necessary. or, find a nut that will spin on said stud, take it back in & use that without even removing your nut.

What Fred said. I am using a t-stat stud in the pickup tube connection with no problems. IIRC, the tread, pitch and length are exactly the same.

Thank God it is a stud! (This is my SHO we are talkin about). So, we need two new T-stat studs and a new Y-pipe stud. Well, Rick you were right it had happened to other people before. What would I do without this place?! hail

Thanks guys! This is just what I was hoping to hear. Helms spec is obviously wrong on those things. What torque should I use?

Doug, I have a spare engine here and I'll try to grab the t-stat housing studs off of it after soaking them in PB Blaster. Lacey's Auto Parts in Salinas will probably be the best source to try first if we need new studs.

Is this break stud month? I've broken like 4 studs on this damn car. Yea, the t-stat housing studs are m6, just twist the old studs out with vice grips and go to AutoZone and find the closest match.
