I have a 1994 MTX with about 100K miles. After driving through a pothole infested stretch of PA turnpike last week, my car has been having some strange symptoms. I know i really whacked at least one big pothole head on. Now, whenever i step on the gas, the shifter gets pushed backwards in my hand about an inch. Whenever i let off the gas, i feel an ominous thump coming from the hood, and the whole car shudders. The only thing i can think of is that i broke an engine mount and the whole engine is being pushed up from the torque, then falling back down when i let off the gas. The car drives fine now otherwise. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem, or knew what exactly was going on.

Try feeding some throttle while in gear and holding the car still with the brakes. While doing this, have a friend stand next to the car (or in front if all you can find is an enemy) looking at the engine. If the engine lifts excessivly, then you can be sure that the front mount is broken. A broken mount can cause bad torque steer, btw.

Motor mounts or a really bad SFB or broken subframe.
