UPDATE!!! Broken axle! Can't get it out!!! HELP!!!!!

Well, as it turns out, my tranny did not go kaput. My driver's side axle decided to snap directly at the beggining of the splines. The whole spline piece is still in the tranny and I can't get it out. What do you guys(and girls) suggest? I've taken out the other axle and tried to put something in there to hammer the other side out. I can't seem to fit a screwdriver in there. A magnet is not taking it out either. I really need help!

Another question I have is, can you tell if you have a quiafe from outside the tranny or do you have to open it up? Can you tell by looking in the hole for the axles?

Thanks in advance and all suggestions will be appreciated!

Well, depending on how far it's sticking out of the tranny, you might be weld on a nut or bolt and then use a slide hammer to yank it out. Your idea of something long in from the other side would work also. I think a sawed off broom stick, flat on both ends might work best. If you use anything steel, just be carefull not to damage the differential housing and splines.

it's not sticking out of the tranny at all. About 1 inch in, is where it starts. The broom stick idea will not work for the same reason the screw driver won't. The diff pins are sticking through there. I can't get anything long enough that's skinny enough to fit through there to hammer it out. any other ideas? thanks for the help so far!

yes... But I'd be worried obout metal shavings... I have bad luck with tranny's... I have gone through 8 or 9 of them in 4-5 years... that's an average of 2 a year and I haven't broken one this year... I hope I don't...:knocks on wood:

Edit: But I may do that and drill a hole in the case(it's time for a drain plug anyway ;) ) so all the shavings fall out.

Edit 2: Any other ideas?

some might fall into the bottom off the case, I think... Wouldn't they? there is some fluid in there so If I were to install a drain plug, I'd be all good, at least I think...

You might want to try something like a 1/8" or similar piece of music wire,,,that real hard stuff. It won't bend easily, should be small enough to fit past the diff pins. Get it at hardware or hobby stores. If you can see diff pins, you have a regular differential,,no Quaife.

try a launching rod from a model rocket. (the thing that guides it from lauch) that should be small enuf, and if u only use 1 of the halves on each side of the pin they shouldnt bend very much.

Thanks! I'll try a piece of welding rod(thin enough and should be strong enough). I never thought of that. If that doesn't work, I'll be drilling, tapping and putting a bolt in to pull it out with my slide hammer. I went and picked up the tranny drain plug stuff today.

WEll I decided that the aluminum welding rod was to flimsy. I saw a coat hanger on the floor of my garage and thought, "What the ****". I slid it in and tapped it once very lightly with a rubber mallet. It fell out like it wasn't even in there to begin with. There is some major damage to the splines and as you can tell from the pics, the thing completely sheared off.

What do you guys think?

I'm still a little worried about metal shavings being in the case, just from the axle breaking. I'll be installing a drain plug soon. I picked up the stuff last night. I ended up getting a fitting that I can cap off, so I don't have to remove the plug everytime(I'm afraid it would eventually strip the hole in the case). I've got the teflon tape(same stuff I use on my shower head when it starts leaking). I've also got the drill bit, the thread tap and the plugs(the fitting and the cap). I'll be putting teflon tape on the fitting on both sides so the cap won't leak either. Does anyone have any more suggestions for me?

There is a magnet in the bottom of the case that will eventually capture any steel particles.

I would just drrain and fill the tranny and not worry too much about it. If you are still concerned, remove the tranny and tear it down to ensure it is clean.

I'm only worried about them for when I first start driving again(I know the magnet will eventually grab them) so I figured I'd drain most of them out with a drainplug then let the magnet do the rest. Thanks!

letting the clutch out SLOWLY in reverse while having my foot on the gas just a little to keep it idling(I need to replace my ect and a few other parts cause it idles like crap). I let it out and then snap there went my axle.

Well that 3.8 was pretty torquey, Considering the rest of the parts that were on the car and how many head gaskets failed... ;)

I used to... Not anymore. I'm now waiting till I get a quiafe!:D But chris(AutoSHO) and Pat Mcgrath(Panama Pat) know how I do burnouts!:p They saw one of my great burnouts, where my whole front end was going back and forth right next to them...:D They looked kind of shocked.

this is so weird, I had the exact same thing happen to my NAPA half shaft two weeks ago when my friend was backing my car out of his driveway. This is so weird that it would break in the exact same spot doing the exact same thing.
