Hey hey,

Got a 91 sho, just replaced the water pump and timing belt, and 1 shifter cable(Fore/aft).
Have 2 questions:

1. There's a shaft goin from the transmission to my front wheels, I noticed that the big boot that goes over it is split open about half way around, and the grease is leakin out. I know this is bad, and I'll replace it, but WHAT IS IT? I can't figure out what it's called to be able to look it up :) And do I have to replace the whole thing? or just the boot?

2. How the heck do you get the left/right shifter cable out to put in a new one? I pulled it and yanked it both ways and it'd go so far the stop either way, I just gave up and hooked it back up and lived with the problems... Any ideas? I have a replacement cable but dunno how to get it in there... Heh

welcome!

#1 That is the halfshaft/CV joint. As the boot is split, the most expedient repair is to replace the halfshaft. They cost about 60 bucks exchange at AutoZone. Plan on a couple more dollars for a new seal and a couple quarts of ATF fluid. You can buy a replacement boot for 20 bucks, but by the time you get the thing replaced, you could have already had the halfshaft installed and be drinking a beer! beer beer

# Dunno, mine hasn't broken yet, it's only 207K miles young......

There was a recent thread on replacing the MTX halfshaft from a week or so ago. Scroll back a couple pages and it should be there.

Have fun!

Steve

The year model (1991 - only manuals until 1993 model year) and the reference to the shifter cables would have given that away. The 1991 service manual specifies that the manual transaxle (MTX) uses ATF Type F or Mercon III.
