Yay I get to chang brakes and 2 rotors tomorrow lucky me!!!!! Seriously though do any of you have any helpful tips to make it easier I have changed brakes before and it always sucks. That piston that forces the pad to the rotor sucks to push back I was thinking what if I use a c clamp and a piece of pipe to use for leverage to turn the handle on the clamp to push it back My uncle said he does this on his SLO and it works well.

The c clamp trick works. I'm not sure why you believe you'll need additional leverage to turn the piston back in.

The brake job is pretty straight forward and doesn't usually result in any problems. Just make sure you have a Torx T40 on hand and some grease for the slider pins. Other than that, you should be set.

When you use the C-Clamp make sure you take the cap off of the brake booster and a little fluid out too (doing this pushes the fluid back through the system). When you put the clamp on there put a piece of wood on the piston and the clamp on it (The C-Clamp might do damage if it comes in direct contact with the piston itself).

eek!

Woah woah! Are we talking about front or back? Because on the back ones if you use a c-clamp you will damage the threads. You need to either use the special tool to turn it in or use a big pair of channel-lock pliers. Pushing the rears ones in will not help.

how much is this special tool and where do I get it, just curious? Is it somthing only a auto shop wood have to work on customers cars? I have a regular use for the tool if it isn't really expensive as I wind up changing brakes for a few cars and I always do it the hard way not having the proper stuff to do it. The hard way meaning I get to lay in the snow to work on cars and the faster I get it done the better.

The rear brake piston tool can be "borrowed" at AutoZone. I think it's a $35 deposit. Use it, bring it back, they refund your money. All of it.

If you want to buy something that works *almost* as well, NAPA stores sell a Ford/GM rear brake piston tool that attaches (I think?) to a 3/8" rathet (or extention). Costs about $10-12 IIRC.

If you're doing front brakes, just PUSH!

Regardless, I like to open the bleeder screw on the caliper I'm turning. A helper and a few quick pumps on the brake pedal and you can get the corner bled you're working on anyway.

hey JD I was talking about fronts sorry for not mentioning it before. But I will have to do the backs as well I now have the piston tool for the back.(I thought it was somthing hard to come by) How many bolts are on the back and what size are they that need to be removed I haven't jacked it up yet I will be starting tomorrow The weather was bad today. I have never had to change back disc brakes before but I knew about turning I just figured I would have to use locking pliers or somthing. For the most part all my cars have had drums in the rear.
