brake upgrades

ok i plan on upgrading my brakes this summer. iv done some searching and the 11.6 rotors look like a pretty solid upgrade. what else should i upgrade. r the stock calipers fine w/ the 11.6 or do u need a different calipers?

also when i press the brakes i get a hissing sound. and iv already replaced the master cylinder. any more ideas? a friend of mine said its probly the brake booster. if so how can i fix this or get a new one?

you will need 94/95 knuckles... they can be taken off of a SHO or SLO provided the donor car has ABS... you will also need 94-99 SHO calipers, or 01+ SLO calipers

FWIW 94+ lincoln continental brakes are the same... look for the FN74 brackets, theyre not only on 96+ SHOs and can be gotten for alot cheaper (mine were from an 03 taurus - $35 shipped for fn74 brackets and two front rotors )

i have yet to install my better brakes, but ive heard that they make a world of difference in the stockers even when upgrading from the already larger 94-95 brakes... plus ive got a set of SS lines to put on with them

I got my upgrade parts from a salvage yard. It cost me 60 for both brackets and both new calipers. All are from an '05 sable. Along with the new rotors i also used ceramic pads. The difference was VERY noticable. I will also be doing the rear 11.6 upgrade. Just wating for stuff thats on back order.

if so, if i find one of these cars in a salvage yard should i just pull all the brake components (calipers, rotors, knuclkes, fn74 brackets) off and "stick" them on my 89?

any 16" rim will clear with plenty of room.

i definately reccomend the ford (motorcraft) pads they are excelent pads! for this upgrade.

Good choice on the '96 upgrade for all but full-race use. I use the Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads. Regarding the hissing sound, is the brake pedal soft? Does the noise happen even with the car not rolling? That would be a vacuum leak in the booster diaphragm. Gig 'em! '82.

ya the brake pedal is soft and it does his when im just sitting there and press it down.

sweet deal w/ the c/o 82. gig'em fo SHO. were u by any chance in the sports car club here? regardless we host autocrosses down here and the next one is april 22. ill be there in my bone stock 89 doin my second autocross. if u want some more info just ask.

Yep - in most cases this is correct!

Ford OEM = Blue box
Motorcraft = Red box

In some cases, OEM items are "sourced" to different OEM suppliers than Motorcraft parts. Ford OEM are most likely still U.S. or Candian sourced. SHO-specific "Blue box" parts are (usually) sourced in Japan. Look at the country-of-origin the next time you receive Blue-box parts.

i also went the junkyard route with the knuckles then went to a napa auto parts and they sold me good loaded calipers for 96 taurus and they work beautifully on my 91 plus

I put the TCE "SHO Stopper" kit on my 93'.....willwood claipers slotted rotors........not cheap but very ver good.....has kept me from a few accidents ....great stopping power
