Got some chrome exhaust tips that are chrome but black, look really nice. The wheels were painted by the previous owner but didn't do the nicest job and i was thinking about trying to get them black chrome, would there be anyway to paint it on? Has anyone ever heard of this?

My exhaust tips are black chrome, they look best if you keep them polished. Don't have a good picture but the folks at ROTB a couple years back really liked 'em.

wouldn't it be the same as black anodized? They sell those at auto parts stores. With the yellow, red, and blue. Just look for anodized paint.

Anodized paint? That term doesn't make any sense to me. Anodizing is a process where you purposefully create a large oxidation layer on a metal (usually aluminum or stainless steel) that acts as a barrier to rust. It's also called passivation. It's definitely not something you do with spray paint.

any powdercoat thats "chrome" will NOT come out anything like what true chrome will. For example my intake is powdercoated chrome, it its more of a paint look. It will look better with a clean over it but there is nothing like true chrome, nothing like the price tag that comes with it either:rofl:

It's called "Anodized" because it gives an anodized look; it's not actually anodizing the substrate. It says on the site you liked that it gives the "look" of anodized. That's not my point - my point is that you can't anodize with paint.

okay?! Yeah I know the difference, and I was actually thinking of the "smoke" and not black chrome, but they sell that product as an anodized look, hence the anodized paint description. We can split hairs all night, no you can't anodize with paint, but you can make it look like it is with paint.:nut:

I had this idea before I got my gunmetal wheels and when I asked my local powdercoater about it, he also mentioned that you can use a transparent black powdercoat on a chrome wheel to get the same effect;

however he said it's really hard to prep chrome for powdercoating without scratching or etching the surface, which could ruin the chrome. It's really hard to get something to stick to a smooth surface, like paint needs sanding, and a good chrome job is about as smooth as you can get.

I've seen wheels come in black chrome, like you have pictured, and it would probably be much easier just to get those wheels already done instead of messing with all of this paint/powdercoating stuff.
