Bit of info on death rattle

I’m fairly sure people here are aware of the death rattle on eco boost engines. Cold starts you get a nasty rattle out of the engine. This seems to be lack of oil pressure and the cam phasers. Cam phasers do go bad as well, especially first gen 3.5. Do a little googling if not familiar with this.

The purpose of the post is not a fix but rather a bandaid that seems to work well. I can’t take credit for it as I found it on YouTube.

The idea is building oil pressure before fire off. This is good for many things, but it also stops that nasty rattle, at least in some cases. When cold starting, put your foot on the brake and the other on the throttle and floor it, then crank it over. As long as the throttle is WOT it will not start and just crank. 2-3 seconds to build pressure. Once you take your foot off the throttle it will fire up and most likely will not have the rattle.

Now, obviously I haven’t tested every single eco boost known to man. Don’t drive through your garage! Test at your own discretion.

This worked on a 2015 SHO.

Mad respect man, pretty damn good idea. I noticed this morning on a colder than usual start (not actually cold) the motor sounding like...... lifters clacking almost. I hope this isn't the same thing. If it is, I can record on a 2014 MKS. Also I'll be crying in the video.

yes when you floor the gas pedal you cut off the injectors. so it helps build oil pressure doing what you said.

still wont help with sticking/worn tensioners, worn timing chains, worn water pump bearings, etc. but at least you won't have to listen to that startup rattle as often.

two other things to consider: if using a motorcraft or fram filter, up it to a purolator boss. quicker and better oil flow. if using 5w20 or 5w30, up it to 10w30 unless you are somewhere in alaska in deep winter. i have recently found that quaker state full synthetic and ultimate at sp certification are actually quite good in terms of NOACK as well as shortening the startup rattle.

if you don't already, park with the level of the passenger front of the vehicle below the driver side where possible.
