Hey guys, I have been doing a lot of searching around for new tires. I am really leaning towards the dunlop sp 5000's. I know a lot of you guys have them on here and have said good things about them. The only thing is, I heard on here while searching, that the 60 and up series 5000's have a different tread design than the 55 series or lower. And I heard that the 60 series ones don't quite hook up as well. If anyone knows any other good tires, or would like to comment on the dunlop's, that would be great. Basically my biggest concern is hooking up off the line. I like those AVS intermediates, but they don't last very long. O yeah and I usually launch by slipping the clutch at 2500, so it's not like I really launch that hard. Thanks,
Chuck

Just a question, why do you want 60 series so bad? Are you trying to stay stock?
If you have slicers, you may want to check out 225/55's. A little bit wider tire may help you get better grip off the line.

I have Yokohama AVSdb 225 60 16; they seem to hold well, even in rain ; the 225 has an extra belt and the speedo is slightly more accurate now, estimate life is 60K as I have 30 K on them and half worn.

Well Chris, to answer your question, I need two new 215 60 series tires because that is what the other 2 tires are and they don't need replacing for awhile. In the future I would definitely want to upgrade to all 4 225 50 series. Oh yeah and those yokomaha's seem like are kinda noisy and pricey. Maybe they work good for you though, who knows. Thanks for the input guys. Anyone one else have any info??

Any ultra high performance tire won't last that long. Yeah there are some wear differences between different models but at the bargain basement closeout price of the AVS-I tires you can't lose.

That depends on your alignment settings and the condition of your various suspension components. Those factors will affect tire wear on any tire. I think you can get 20K miles out of the tire as long as you aren't driving them in the rain at the end of their life cycle. I think I've been getting about 20K on my SHO with those tires. On another make of car with the alignment set up more for handling than for tire wear I got as little as 8000 miles on those tires.

You can get long life out of any tire as long as you keep the alignment correct. I just took off 2 BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO tires from my mountaineer. 87000+ miles on them, and they still had excellent tread. The only reason they were replaced (1/2 tread left) was because some ******* sliced the sidewall on the 2 fronts. The rears which I had rotated up front have over 95k on them, with at least a 1/4 of the tread left!!! That's what you get when you're **** about alignments.

k thanks for the info, I just can't find any place to buy these yoko tires. If anyone knows any other good tire that has excellent traction off the line, that would be great too.

Tirerack is the only place to by yokohama AVS-I tires. The tires have been discontinued since last summer, maybe even before that. Tirerack bought all the existing stock of those tires to be found in this country.

You are just plain out of luck on getting an AVS-I tire in the 215/60-16 size. That tire in that size is just not available. In fact it looks like tirerack doesn't have any high performance tires in that size. If I were in your shoes I'd just ditch all four tires and get a set of Yokohama ES100 tires sized 225/55-16. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVS+ES100&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=255WR6ES100
The ES100 is the spiritual successor to the AVS-I series. They should beat the AVS-I tire in every respect except for the bargain basement, firesale price. Still, at $87 each they're a damn good deal.

Hey Chuck, Dave here.

The sp5000s aren't all that bad. I've been able to keep them for at least three years now (according to my receipts that came with the car) and their traction is very good. They're not too expensive, and wet weather and snow has been great. If you have to go with 215/60 I would recommend them.

Hope to see you and the rest of the SD guys soon; once the weather gets better it's SHO time!

Dave
