After driving for a few minutes tonight I smelled a strong sulfer smell. After pulling over and popping the hood I noticed putrid steam coming from the vent holes on the battery. Did not notice any difference with the vehicle electronics. Still continued to run and start just fine. The battery is less than one year old. Any ideas? Could this be a problem with wiring, alternator, battery?

A possible bad cell could have caused the alt to overcharge the battery. Did you get a warranty with that battery?

Could be a bad voltage regulator. And supplied too much power to the battery. Check or get the voltage checked before driving again.

I will definitely check the voltage before I hook everything back up. Right now I am in the middle of replacing the back brakes. I spent about half an hour with a C-clamp. Reading the forums before tackling anything makes things so much easier.

no, no additional accessories on the battery. Just unhooked all the power and ground wires when I noticed steam coming from the battery.

I just recently purchased the SHO. The battery was new within the past year and was an Energizer. I have no idea where it may have even came from.

They sell energizer here in Canada. There made by Johnson controls or something. In my experience they are junk. 1 year is the most I got out of one.

I checked the voltage and found a range from 16-18V with the vehicle running and the headlights on. Is the voltage regulator built into the alternator on the 3.2. I also just replaced headlights with Sylvania Silverstar. When turning on the highbeam lights the lights first went dim then completely went out. Did I blow these new bulbs or is there something else on the car that may have went out?

Thats way too much power being fed to the battery. The voltage reg is part of the Alt yes. You could replace it if you needed to. If the Alt is old it maybe a good idea to just get a different one anyway. Or get that one rebuilt. You very well could have blowen the bulbs with that voltage. Btw once your voltage reg stuff is figured out make sure you check the water level in your battery. Make sure the plates are covered. If they are not use distilled water to cover them about 1/8 of a inch or so.

Just had the voltage checked by AutoZone and it averaged 18.4 V. Is is possible to just change the voltage regulator and how hard is the process. AutoZone quoted me 180.00 for a 120A alternator. If anyone has done this or has any other ideas they would be greatly appreciated.
