Battery light on

my battery light came on, but when i un hook the battery car stays running, meaning alternator is still working. my question is what makes a battery light come on besdies the alternator not charging?

Have you tried using a volt meter?

Remove alternator, have it tested, buy new alternator, install.

It can keep the car running, but that doesn't tell you how well it is or isn't charging...

im out of town, dont have any tools with, but i got hold of a multimeter and is over charging

Replace the alternator for sure. You can get one from a local junkyard if you would like or from someone here on the forum considering they are fairly expensive new. Have the battery checked while your at it. Most auto parts stores will test and check both the alternator and battery for free.

Overcharging turns the light on as well. There are posts on this forum explaining how it all works (I think from Hawkeye).
I think it is too risky to nurse it back home, not only for your battery, but all your electrical components.
