its funny, I read elsewhere that the whole battery light illuminating under heavy acceleration is normal, which I thought was really stupid and wrong but I believed it... I dont seem to ever get a correct answer from anyone I talk to besides here.

Sorry, I read "step on the gas" as anytime the accelerator is pressed, not just at high rpms. :bonk:

The high rpm issue is due to the voltage regulator clipping at high rpms. Other than the OE original regulators (which are not available separately), all other regulators are hit-and-miss with regard to their ability to regulate power output at high rpms, so the clipping is the internal safety mechanism to prevent an overcharging condition.

My car has done the same thing at high rpm's since I bought it. Over 1.5 now...car still runs strong, I have had the alternator tested a couple of times just to verify its charging ability. I also wondered if it would produce the same results (battery light at high rpm's) if a "windstar" alternator was installed?? Thoughts??

That's what you have already.

I can attest to the alternator being the trouble but not necessarily failing. My first one would iluminate the battery light above 5,000 everytime and I would get the added bonus of an extre little punch at the same time. After about 6 months though I got nervous that it would just up an quit one day so I replaced it. I missed the little "kick" of power though so I traced the fields ground to the speedometer and wired a dual pole relay with a switch so I could manually shut of the alternator at any speed I wanted. Paul liked the idea so much he made an automatic version (VAK?) that worked at a WOT level drop in manifold pressure that would also activate an auxillary battery into the system to make up for the drop in voltage so the coils were getting a full 14 volts.
