Hi all... Today I swapped tires from the 91' SHO to the GL. Now the GL has lower profile and wider tires, and blank center caps. (For everyone that was bugging me)

These tires definately make the car handle better and ride a lot firmer, but I hear this clunk every time I go over a bump. It's coming from the rear and it is more annoying now than before, because these tires exagerate every bump. any help is appreciated. Thanks.

strut mounts my friend. A common SHO problem. The struts do need to be removed in order for the mounts to be replaced, which tallies up to some nice labor costs. I'd live with it till you want to upgrade the suspension, then do it all at one time.

Replace the rear sway bar mid section bushings(about $15). They rot out and the sway bar can rattle around. It's a 20 min job as each bracket is only held on with 1 bolt.

hmmmmm... well ya see the car below and to the right? The blue one? That's the one with the problem... and the sway bars have only been on for 8 months and they are nice and tight. Do the SHO's and non SHO's share the same Strut mounting? Do I have to remove the strut to correct the problem? Thanks guys. I'm sorry if I'm just repeating old questions, but the search feature on this board is absolutely horrible. I have a cable modem and it took 5 minutes to search for one thing. Maybe I did something wrong. Hmmmm.

Just out of curiosity, wouldnt you want the lower profile wheels on the SHO? Also I dont think the mounting would be the same, look at the strut, are they alike in looks? on the GL, and the SHO?

Check your rear sway bar links. I got a sound like that on my Tempo when the first one broke, and with one gone the other shortly followed.

Well the SHO (red one) is going for parts. So I wanted the new low profile tires for the GL. I must tell you, what a difference! With the sway bars, and the wheels, wow! It handles better then the 94' SHO now. Probably because the sway bars are bigger...

Oh yeah. The sway bars are both nice and firm. So I know that's not the problem.

So when I look at the rear towers, what am I looking for? Should something be rattling?

I had a clunking noise in the rear everytime I went over a bump and it turned out to be a loose bolt that held the caliper on. Tightened it up and no noise! In the meantime I changed the whole suspension including the mounts and it didn't solve the problem until I looked again and that damn bolt. (It needed suspension bad anyways!)

The strut mount(actually called a strut cup)isn`t visible.Look in the trunk,of top of the strut towers. Those 3 bolts are for the cups. The cups bolt to the body by the 3 screws, then the strut bolts to the cup with the end of the strut shaft.Mine clunks and squeaks like no tomorrow. The cups are around $40 each.
