more rubber, more HP.....
The last two autocrosses were conducted in moderate to heavy rain. Just thought I'd share some thoughts from these 'unique' learning experiences.

- I did a lot worse in the rain, no question there. 39th out of 136 entrants, and 26th out of 96, respectively.

- My car, which is set up for neutral handling in dry weather, oversteers quite dramatically in the rain. I got to practice countersteering and spin-out recovery quite a lot. :snicker:

- Although it is the best dry tire I have ran, the Hoosier A6 makes for a truly lousy rain tire.

- The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's, which are my current street tire, have been touted by Tire Rack and C&D as one of the very best rain tires available. I don't know how much Goodyear paid them to say this, or what flavor crack they were smoking that day, but the GS-D3's fail miserably on a wet autocross course (48th-place finish of 96).

- My old Kumho Victoracers were a pleasant surprise. They actually did fairly well in the rain, leading to an overwhelming 26th-place finish out of 96 entrants. 2.3 sec faster than the GS-D3's. It could have done a lot worse, believe me.

- Cars that finished in the top ranks were running Falken Azenis RT-615's, Kumho ECSTA V710's, and Hoosier Wet Radials.

- I was surprised that the V710's, which are basically radial slicks with a couple longitudinal grooves, did so well in the rain. Figure that one out.

- Mini Cooper S's haul some major ass in the rain.

- If you've stripped out your heater/defroster, coat the inside of your windshield with RainX so you can see the course.

So the 2006 season is officially over. We start again in January. It will still be raining through April at least. I need to decide which wet tires to run. Probably the Falken Azenis or V710's. I've heard that the Hankook Ventus r-s2 z212 are good rain tires, but I've yet to see someone use them around here. I already have the idea I need more negative rear camber and/or less rear toe-out to counteract the oversteer tendency in the rain.

i still can't wait to try these azenis. i like them so far in the dry, but haven't been able to race on them yet. hoping to this month if i can figure out my brake problem in time. i would hate to see my car in the rain. it oversteers in the dry.

we have two more races till our season is over so i feel your pain. i'll have to come up with a cool project to help me through the off season.

I've no idea how well they'd fare in an autox, but I had the g-Force KDWs out on AMP in heavy rain and absolutely kicked butt. There were very few cars out there faster than I was; I chased down a GT3 that couldn't get the power down in the slick conditions.

There were people stopping by in the paddock to see what tires I had on, it was pretty fun.

Hmm... sounds interesting. On tirerack they list a KDW and KDW2. Which one's are you using?

The last NESHOC solo trials (1:30 dry to 1:50 wet long high speed courses) had pretty steady rain during the first sets of runs, I think I ended up second out of 45 at that point. I had full tread depth Toyo RA1s on the rear and the front RA1's were down to there last two little tread grooves. Car has Quiafe, Konis, 245 RA1's's on 16 x 8 forgings, but is mostly stock.

For street tires I am starting to switch over to the F1 GS D3's, they look to have kind of a squirm prone tread pattern. Am making the switch from Bridgestone S03's, which are fantastic in the rain until they get to be about 3 years old, then they harden up too much.

Glad to see a forum just on autocrossing the SHO, I've been autocrossing mine for almost a decade, and have learned some things along the way - zak

One more comment, on wet tracks run full race rubber, as long as there are no standing puddles. If puddles are forming of any signficance you need tread - zak

At the time I had KDW, as the KDW2 wasn't out yet.
