Well I am trying to find options for my ATX when she blows (probably this summer). Should I have my original rebuilt or should I replace it with a newer design?

The timetable I understand was
AXOD-E
AX4S
AX4N

The 4N probably is the latest of the automatics. Would it bolt to a SHO? Are there any wear benefits from a "newer" style auto?

TIA!

All the Gen II ATX's were AXOD-E's. The Gen III's had a different array if I'm correct. As far as I know the AXOD-E is the only one that can be put back in. It can be modded of course but not replaced with an entirly different unit. So, I don't think, in answer to your question, that it can be replaced by a 'newer design tranny'. I'd have either a Ford reman unit put in or have a FPS (SHOfast is building a good rep also) tranny in. If that is to rich for your blood you can gamble with a local rebuild shop, and have them install a shift kit.

thanks much doug. I am weighing my options. Basically I estimate 10k left on my transmission if I'm lucky. I might want to do an MTX conversion, but simplicity says just rebuild it... I probably will do some heavy research beforehand. I hate getting gipped.

Your '95 ATX has a SHO-specific AX4S variant of the AXOD-E transaxle. The AX4N will not bolt up, and although some 4N parts can be used in the 4S, the benefits IMHO are negligible. The tranny design just doesn't take the power of the V6 or V8 SHO's well over time.

Best bet would be to either have your tranny rebuilt by someone you trust, or get one from one of the reputable SHO vendors.
