AX4N or AX4S. What type tranny is for '97? I want my SHO back on the road. I'm very tired of driving my '77 Chevy LUV truck.

1993-1995 ATX's are the AX4S (synchronized). 1996-1999 ATX's are the AX4N(non-synchronized)

Some of the confusion on the Gen 2 trannies are that the pan is still stamped AXOD METRIC; The AX4S is a variation / upgrade of the AXOD / AXOD-E, I believe, and they never came out with an AX4S-specific pan.

Actually the 1993 was a AXOD-E (electronic controlled)
The 1994-1995 was the AX4S
The 1996-1998 was the AX4N
I dont know where you get the synchronized and non synchronized from as My Ford factory transmission manuals or my ATI transmission manuals dont mention that..
They are all basicly the same trans. except for the updated solonoids and some minor differences in the valve bodys and torque converters.
The AX4S did have some upgrades from bronze bushings to needle bearings in a few places but do to them giving more problems than the bushings Ford went back to using bushings in the AX4N
