My 95 with almost 180K quit shifting into third gear about a week ago. When it tries to shift it simply acts like someone put the car into neutral. When it is kept in "D" it will not shift out of first but can be driven in second if the gear shift is moved to "2." Even before this happened it was more or less sliding from first to second instead of a firm shift. Is there anything else this could be or is it just time for a new transmission? Any ideas?

It doesn't sound good. Did you run your codes to see what tranny issues it may bring up? If I were a betting man I would say you need a rebuild. Check them codes and if you need help doing that check out my sig.

What gives?

After driving the car for about a week in second gear I took it out tonight and really beat the **** out of it. I was not very nice to this car at all. Put it in drive to take off and shifts from first to second, and then second to third. I almost didn't want to slow down as I was unsure if it would do it again. I drove it around for about half an hour and everything seems ok. Any ideas on what could be wrong or does this thing just have a mind of its own?

648-Transmission 4th gear failure - Transmissions

136-Oxygen sensor not switching/system lean Left or Front HO2S - Fuel control
332-EGR did not open/respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittently
538-System did not receive "goose" test
521-Wheel not turned during test or PSP problem

Well for starters it looks like you need a set of O2 sensors, Your EGR system is also going to require some help. The tranny faults did defiantly show up. I would say you are on borrowed time from now on. Maybe you should clear the codes (by pulling the jumper when the codes are being spit out) then try them again in a bit to see what they say then. Do you have a CEL on?

Yep sounds like you got the old fried planetary set to me. I would be priceing some rebuilds around town and by a good reputable place.
They may wish to never see the car afterwards but looks like you need a rebuild.
