Hey guys.

I have the ATX all torn down now to replace the waterpump, timing belt and CPS.

When installing a new belt, is it critical that I have the tensioning tools to set the new belt, or should I simply remove the automatic tensioner, reset the piston in a vice, and reinstall it?

TIA

PS, I had a look in the search, but came up without any clear answer to my question...

If I rememeber correctly it will automatically tension itself. Look in the thread above in the Autozone how to guides. I think one is for the timing belt.

As long as you don't loosen the nut on the tensioner pulley you can just compress the piston in the auto tensioner and reinstall it. If you loosened the nut, you can try to guesstimate where it was or you'll have to fab up a tool or buy them from Josh.

I saw that, steve...it is what got me thinking about what it is that I have to do.

The ford manual that I have states that I need the tools to properly set the tension.

All I want to do then is remove the tensioner and replace it, touch nothing else...

Thanks

In that case, you don't need the tools as long as you do not loosen the nut that secures the eccentric for the idler roller.
