I've read you shouldn't change your ATX fluid if you have high mileage and it's never been changed before because it will cause the tranny to fail. Any validity to this?

I've heard the same thing but was told it was basically an old wive's tale. However, after recently having my tranny flushed (114k miles, still original) the trans has now developed some very serious problems. It is shifting very hard as well as slipping. So, I guess it could go either way. Then again, I have a '93, and it's probably just the tranny;s time (it seems to have been abused, especially by me when I first bought the car).

did they do a pan drop only or a total fluid exchange 99.something percent changed. A pan drop gets about 40% and tends to only stir up the "gunk" and the new fluid simply gets mixed in and deteroriates thanks to the old fluid. since the trans cooler and torque converter are still full of old fluid.

Let me just say this. My dad put a new engine in our pastor's Thunderbird. The transmission fluid had never been changed at 150K, but the transmission showed no signs of slipping or other problems. We drained the Torque Convertor, radiator oil cooler, and transmission pan. After putting everything back together, the transmission was slipping when we pulled it out of the garage! That tells me if it's got over 60K on it LEAVE IT ALONE. You will only accelerate the demise of your transmission. After this one dies, and they all will, change all the fluid in the new one every 20K. My dad has a fleet F-350 with 270K miles on it and it still has the same Automatic transmission (it's an E4OD, much like the SHO, they are known for premature failure), but the fluid has been changed every 20K and it still shifts smooth as glass with no hint of slippage.
