Well my 95' ATX has been needing a new set of cats for quite a qhile now. They run really hot and bright red most of the time. I know this was probably related to it running too rich. Well looking at the proces of ATX y-pipes and !579!.......Umm thats a little too much even though its better tubing and hi flow cats (heard those magnaflow ones arent made as good as stock though??) Well looking into other options right now and it seems I can replace the cats alone just by cutting off the old ones, clamping in the same size cat, then getting it all welded up later. Thats is pretty easy to do right?

From there though I started thinking that they dont make an catless ATX y-pipe. Since my car JUST passed emissions and Ill have two years on "off-road use" before It needs retesting, could I instead replace the section where the cats where with a same diameter straight pipe. Just expand the ends of the two sections then clamp them where the cats where. This would allow me to test it out for a while seeing the tourque loss and if it is that noticable I would still have the opprotunity to just go buy the new cats then reclamp, right?

Wouldnt this be better than me gutting out the cats because that would leave and empty chamber larger than the tubing going into and out of it. That would have to mess up the flow. And I coulnt weld anyways so gutting the cats wasnt even plausible. SO tell me what you think

I got a whole new 2.25" mandrel bent y-pipe custom made for $460. I asked him how much it would be if I just got cats, and he said "around $300." The extra $160 was well worth it.

Did you have to give than any dimensions on the y-pipe or did they just go off the old one?

Would a catless ATX tourque loss be noticeable or just a change in sound? I dont want to lose any tourque though especially before 4 grand. So what size cats should I go with? Also high flow or not? Thanks

I'd go with high flow. Personally, I have Magnaflow Freeflows. He went off the old pipe.

Is your guy interested in making more of those ATX pipes?

He only does customers he can see. I was the first SHO he's made a pipe for.

Cool thanks for all the helpful info. So 2.25 was the best size probably, got the dynomax cat-back so I think increasing the whole pipe size would be best. Plus putting better cats on the car would help.
