I swapped the trans last Jan '04 with a 120K used one. Replaced filter and fluid and cleaned the pan when I did the swap. Everything has been fine 30k miles later until this week. It started to slip as it shifted from 1 -2. It progressed quickly to not driveable. 1st is good but unless I'm heading down hill I can't get enough speed in 2nd to make 3rd. If I do get going down hill it will shift to 3rd but the tack shows it slips if I gas it at all. I eventually have to slow back to first and shift to L to keep it in 1st and get home so as not to wear everthing out. Now the fluid smells burnt. Time for a rebuild/swap? I got 220k from the first trans, I can't believe this one didn't make 150k. It's our daily driver and we aren't that ******* it, if at all.

thanks

update Sunday Mar. 13
dropped the pan and found a piece of broken bushing on the magnet, something broke in there :frown:

why did you install a use unrebuilt trans, thats alot of work to just pull it out again, most ax4s/ax4n are done by 100k and really do need to be gone thru. I'm working thru netviper for atx rebuilds. i can rebuild and update and improve your tranny. I'm also working on a LSD for the auto trannys.

95SHO32, I know I should be installing a rebuilt, but can't afford $1500 + right now. And we need the car to drive so I don't have much time. What's an LSD?

well I've about got myself talked into a rebuild. So far the best deal and warranty is a Ford reman for $1800 - %10 employee disc. So for about $1700 I get it delivered local and a 36/36 warranty.

A FPS unit from Doug Lewis would be nice but with shipping its about a grand more.

Anyone heard of problems with Ford remans?

My 95' has a 40000 mile rebuilt tranny and it goes into gear (from park or neutral to drive, second or first) damn hard. but it shifts ok. They can never get your kick down set right either.(all of this is if you have them install). Other wise i think they are good.

93whiteatx, you're talking about a Ford reman? Did they install it? What did you pay?

btw, now I'm looking at driving to Chicago for a rebuilt from Roadmaster transmissions. They quoted $800 with 2 year warranty and he has one on the shelf ready to go. So far I can't find anything bad about Roadmaster.
