Well my 98 SHO was totaled yesterday morning. Got hit while making a left turn. The guy ran a red light, you fill in the blanks. It was just myself in the car, glad my kids were not in there. Nobody was was hurt, I'm just a little sore. The other driver was running late and didn't see the red light, at least that's what he said to me after. Anyhow the car was written off as a total loss buy the insurance co. Most likely I will not be buying it back, they want $1516 for it. To bad its a low mileage car 71k with welded cams almost new tires battery, and the only set of SHOSource lowering springs.

I'm sorry to see that Eric! Seems like there are a lot of nice SHOs meeting their untimely deaths lately. It's amazing how quickly one idiot that's 'running late' and 'doesn't see' something can ruin something you've spent so long keeping nice. But, it is just a car, and I'm glad you are safe!

Glad you were okay, and no kids were in the car. Sorry to hear about the loss of a nice low mileage piece. :(

First it looked like in the pics it was just rear damage. But after seeing all pics, it looks like it actually "squeezed" the car, to make the windsheild break and the airbags deploy. Seems kinda weird that the airbags deployed for a hit to the right rear.

I would almost just buy it back to let the parts go to someone who could use them. Seems like a shame to just let those pieces go. But you do need to do what is best for your situation.

Again, glad you were okay. :)

It does seem like SHO's are dropping like flies. But hey, the value or at least the rarity of the GEN III just went up.

Maybe the airbags deployed because it was not a 100% side impact. From the drivers seat it looked like he was coming in from the 1:30 maybe 2 o'clock position. It felt very violent, my previous accident involving my 95 dint feel anywhere near like this one.

On the buy back, I don't want to sit on these parts for a long time just to get my money back. I wouldn't do it to make money, just want to see the parts put to good use.

I contacted Mike @ SHOSource and he said he has 3 GEN III and hasn't sold parts from those cars, that is also pushing me into letting it go.

Eric, that's a shame, was a fine lookin' '98. Say, just out curiosity, did I buy a white '91 Police grill off Ebay from you back in '08?

Yep, and the spring clips were seperate in the box. I never delete any emails of people I buy from, your screen name rang a bell. Great grill by the way.

I would suggest buying it and parting it out. It might take a bit of time but you would likely do very well out of it in the end. With a low miles and already welded motor, and OK trans, and a lot of likely fine condition suspension and interior parts that are getting outright hard to find, if not impossible to find, in the parts supply network, you could easily double your money.

Eric, did you sell him that grill you bought from me in '08?! :munch:

Hit up all your local yards in a month or so and get those springs for me. ;)
That was a spare I found at pick and pull. Yours is sitting on project 195. I will keep an eye out at the local yards for the car, and if its found I will get the springs for you Matt.

I doubt its worth the hassle for me to keep it. Like I said, I got in contact with Mike at SHOSource and he mentioned that they are having trouble selling parts from the three cars they have. I assume it would take months to get rid of the parts to recover the cost. If someone came up and said they will pay the cash and take it, I'm up for it.

Did you have your car appraised? Your car looks exceptional and it would hope you got a good settlement.

When my 94' SHO was totalled I would not accept the settlement or release the car. Everyday it sat in storage cost the insurnace company.

It's really not worth letting it sit in your driveway (or garage) for months waiting to part things out. Hopefully you get a fair amount from the insurance company.

I would suggest, if you want another SHO like this, to try lowball insurance company a little. This car will not be sold for anything more than 400 bucks and even if they junk it, they will get tops of 500. YOu have to spend hours on the phone with those suckers explaining that to them and I am sure they would drop their price after giving it a thought for coulple of days.

Its in very good shape, minus the damaged area, I just don't want to deal with it. I will be missed, had great trips in that car, but I have a 95MTX and a 91+ (Project 195) that will be getting a jump start with the money from the accident.

Have you asked why they want $1516.00 for it? They know they are not going to get that from anyone.
When my 96 Mustang convertible was stolen and recovered, the salvage value that I paid to get it back was $300.00. That was 3 years ago.
What gives?

Actually they want $1560 or about 24% of what the car was worth before the accident (It was appraised at the low side of $6500 high $7200) I think $1560 is a bit high for a buy back. I was hoping for $200 maybe $400. I guess a trip to the auction house is in order. Its dealers only and I should be able to get it for $400 maybe $600.

Going to the auction is a good idea.
Your insurance company needs a reality check.
You will be able to buy it for next to nothing, the guys in the businesss only buy the cars that do not need work. Even though they have the equipment and facilities to fix them, they don't bother.... because they can make as much or more money buying the ones that just need to be tidied up.
They may not even get a bid.
Good luck and I hope it turns out well.
