I've said it before, but I must give testimony on the awesome knowledge base this board has.
I read sdpatt's thermostat posts and commented that my temp gauge was acting funny too. I had good heat coming out of vents, but strangely the gauge was abnormally low. Every now and then it would go to the 1/4 mark, but for the most part it was running cooler.
Well the I consulted the SHO oracle and he said, "the rubber seal on the t-stat deteriorates after awhile and water always flows past it. Replace t-stat and you will be ok.
I pull the t-stat and compare it to the new one I just bought. Boiled them both in a *** of water cause I want to know that I know that the new stat works. Old stat looks like it functions ok to me as does the new one. BOth open at the same temp and closed properly when cooled. Im thinking, well scott can't be right all the time, the rubber on the old t-stat looks fine to me. I was questioning the diagnosis. (My wife actually thinks I look for things to fix on the car even when they arent broken). So telling her she can't drive the SHO for a day while I putz with it is not her favorite thing to hear. She does comment that every time I read the posts, I'm out in the garage the next day fooling with stuff.
Anyways, seeing how I came this far, I replace the old stat and start up the car....totally in doubt that the problem will go away, and that the wisdom of the board finally let me down. By the way, it took me an hour from start to finish, but I did watch the Simpsons in the garage while I was working on it.
Well 15 minutes later, Lo and behold, the gauge was now at 1/4 like normal. Took it for a drive and volia! problem solved. Now I'm confused...what was wrong with the old t-stat? I go back to look at it with a very keen eye. Opens and closes fine, rubber looks good. What the heck was sd talking about. He knows his **** on the SHO, what is up? ....ahhh, hold it up to the light and I see that the rubber seal doesnt quite shut completely. Hardly visible without holding it up, there is a ring of light coming thru the seal which would confirm the diagnosis of the Nuclear Scientist/SHO owner extraordinaire. "The fluid would seep around the that aged seal never allowing the engine to reach the right temp." I did have the occasional correct gauge reading, which was explained by the fact that I cycled the t-stat on the stove enough that sometimes it would seal better than others, even to the point where it would close all the way. Man even Clik and Clack would be hard pressed to pinpoint that exact problem.
Thanks Scott
Im telling you, as long at this board exists, you will always have a job....albeit a low paying one, I would toss in a few bucks to the "keep Scott's kids fed SHO fund raiser program"
Thank you for reading my long testimony.
