I am 2 hours West in Toledo. I would think living in the rust belt, non-welded cams, transmissions that fail after 150,000 miles if not properly maintained would be a few of the reasons.

For what it is worth, over time these cars are going to become pretty uncommon. With only 20K of them originally built and a very high attrition rate due to the cam sprocket flaw, they will be rare faster than most production vehicles, certainly. With that will come an increase in value from the collector car crowd. I doubt they will ever be worth "a fortune', but it would not surprise me at all if in a decade or two they are back to the original dollar value they sold at when new for one in very good condition. Its just how scarcity works.

My black 96 is still hanging in. It's my work car and I put the bare minimum in to it. But it starts everyday and saves me a note.......

I have 2 99s I live about an hour west of Cleveland. I still manage to see them around but not very often. Usually when i see them they are pretty rotted out

comparison

I'd be interested to find out the present-day conditions of those vehicle whose owners did the soap chip wash, clay bar, polish, and wax treatment versus those who only washed with an occasional wax. Someone back in the day was offering auto cleaning products that mentioned the clay bar (Paul Fisher - DC Car Care?). That's where I got the idea. I've been doing the clay bar at least once a year and aside from some minor courses of oxidation (and dents I suspect are from people I've cut off on the way to work), I'd say my car is holding its own.

I live in the Cincinnati OH area and my 96 only has 65,636 miles on it. Has been my baby car. I just found out the oil filter housing field is leaking and ford discontinued that part. I got my suspension checked (only has a minor leak, so still has some life left) but thepart listed for the 96SHO has no electrical connection like mine. Apparently Ford has discontinued those too. I am being told that it will be a miracle to find parts in as good as shape as my SHO and I should just trade it in. Have any suggestions. Is there an after market that makes parts after Ford stops?

You might check with the main after market people like Rock Auto. Other than that, its off to the salvage yard. Mine blew up its alternator yesterday, so I am checking to see if there are any left in the pipeline. This sort of thing happens with any limited production vehicle as time goes by, and ours certainly qualify.

:)In response to Ruthie. Sounds like your car is running. Yes, it is a 15+ year old car and older cars leak oil. The Oil filter has known to leak and as long as it's not a huge leak you should be ok. There are solutiions to fix the leak if you search this forum. It is basically an o-ring that leaks. I would not trade it in. Especially if it is running and not rusted out.

hello

Ruthie, welcome to the forum! There are a few folks parting these cars out, but as time goes on, as Stephen mentioned, it is inevitable that you'll be up a creek. I'm with toledogt, don't trade it in!! I was told that I should trade in my 98 after the tranny started acting up. Couldn't do it. I'm glad I ponied up for the rebuild - LIFETIME WARRANTY.

Stephen, sorry to hear about that. You have some fun times ahead of you, as you have probably already experienced. =)
What are you referring to by "any left in the pipeline"? Alternators? If so, they are plentiful, even Motorcrafts. FWIW, I went with the Remy brand back in the fall and have had no issues. It's priced below Motorcraft but above most others. I tied on a heat-deflecting wrap to lie between the alt and the rear exhaust (not the same as Nimz, but that's where I got the idea). Gets hot in FL and if I can get even another couple years out of this one over the last, I'll be a happy camper (as if other electrical problems won't crop up!)

I will check on Remy, though I suspect I will end up with Motorcraft. The alternator had been showing signs of problems for a bit, but considering it is something over 150k old, I have little to complain about. The first one got replaced under warranty back at 45k or so forever ago. This one has done very well, actually.

The car has been getting only occasional use since I shifted to the Porsche 911 C4S as my daily driver, but we have a small road trip coming up with three people, so we will take it for the run. There is a back seat in the 911, and for the size people involved they could even use it, but the back of the SHO is a lot more comfortable and spacious.

I rarely see a Gen III SLO in Omaha. I think they are all rotted out around here. And any SHO I spot is truly a rare find. CL has a few for sale as always, and even had a couple with pretty low miles, but I am in no hurry to dive back in.

In my small college town of Manhattan, KS (50k population), I see them daily.. and SHO's too. We have 6, that's I've seen, here in town. Probably none of them are welded except for mine either lol.

I know there's a black 96-7 V8SHO in downtown Columbia, and I used to see a red 96-7 up on my side of town (Northeast Columbia). Besides my red 97, and whatever is on CL, I hardly ever see them on the road down here...but I guess that's partly because it's mostly japanese/korean sedans down here.

Whenever I cross into VA and more into WVA on my way to Michigan, it's interesting to note the vast drop in Korean/Japanese stuff, and the vast increase of American branded stuff going down the road.
