Yes you will need an amp to power it. You will need to try and find a stock amp if you want to go all stock. Otherwise I wold advise going aftermarket. You can find a low power amp that wont cost much if you look around. If you wire off of the back speakers you will potentially fry the head unit. If you go aftermarket you will need to use the hi input that run off of the speakers since the stock head unit does not have RCA outputs. You will need to find any needed JBL wire harnesses for amps. I think it will be a lot more work for something that is not of the greatest quality.

Thanks,

Here's an my idea, let me know what you think.

Stock head unit
Stock CD Player
Stock sub box with an aftermarket sub and amp
Aftermarket amp (here in lies the delima) what about wiring and stuff?

I'm by no means an audiophile so I need some imput on this. I just want the stock sub box for easy install and look, I don't want a big box in my trunk.

I have no clue what amp to buy... a big ass four channel with sub out??? to run the whole thing, or just a seperate amp for the sub or what>>>>?

Help

Your amp all depends on what kind of sub you want, since your sub will be 6" (unless you modify the stock case) a bigass amp is gonna be overkill. Just go to your local audio store (not! bestbuy) and either take your box, or give m the dimensions, they will hook you up.

You dont have a specific sub output on that stock stuff i think, so you'll need a crossover also, combine the 2 rear channels for your sub.

Crutchfield has an adapter that works nice, you can slip it onto the stock harnass/plug and will have labeled wires coming off.

BTW, it turns out JL Audio makes a 6.5" sub that fits the stock sub box perfectly; even the mounting holes line up.

Model number 6W0-8 (indicates the nominal 6" 8 ohm sub).

Well you can go one of 2 ways get a small 100watt mono load amp and wire that to the sub. Since the head unit does not have RCA outputs you will need to hok it up to the hi-inputs which run off the speakers. YOu can have it run off the back speakers. You will only need to wire the power and a wire to turn on the amp when the stereo turns on. Grounding can be wired in the trunk. The other ways is go the same route but get a 5 channel amp and use it to booste your speakers. This will big you better sound, go higher and lower. 100watts is about all you will need for the sub due to the size. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. I've decided to get the stock sub box, and stock sub amp then go from there with aftermarket.

I didn't/don't want a big sub box in my trunk (too much traveling).

Just needed to know what wiring will be needed to add the stock sub and sub amp to a non JBL system.

For wiring you will need to run a power cable from the battery for the amp. You will also need to run a signal wire from the head unit that tells the amp to turn on. You can ground the amp in the trunk. You will need to run a connection from the back speakers to the hi-input of the amp for the sound. Then just hook up the amp to the sub.

I was just perusing the audio system section of my shop manual. It shows the sub amp mounted right next to the factory amp. The factory amp has an output which plugs into the stock sub amp. From what I can tell, all you will need is the sub and the sub amp, but I could be wrong....
BTW, my sub driver recently died. I replaced it with a Rockford Fosgate RFP3406 (6.5 inch 4 ohms), which I got from Crutchfield. Good luck.
