I just sampled a 2006 focus 2.3L Duratec Ignition Coil. Slides right in, all you have to do is swap the ignition wire and boot... ...SO, my intentions are to get 8 focus coils and install them in the SHO and look for improvement.

Please keep us informed of the results.

I will, the call has been made for 8 coils/pricing. Also, rock auto have replacement boot kits in packs of 3 for $3.00

Spring wire probably can be reused and then just install new boots.

Sorry took so long to get back to this thread. Been working 30 days straight and finally got some days off to work on the car. Here is pics of what I did to get the Accel coils to work. As you can see the Accel boot is longer, so I swapped out the boots. Also you will notice the coiled wire is longer too, so I marked the wire at the bottom on the boot. You will also notice I had to remove some so I could removed the support peice then shortened the coil the rest of the way. I tired to get the coiled wire to as close as the orginal when the spark plug isnt in it. Yes I know about not having and mounting points but when running just the one at first didnt have any idle issues or anything. So right now as you can see just running the 4 in the rear since I had the car apart to do the cams. I hope this and the pics help out, Im just winging it here.

Have you been running it for a while now without the coils mounted down? If so, any problems with misses?

The trial coil was in cylinder #8. Since I guess this is the one the controls idle, I stuck it there. Didnt notices any misses. As you can see in the one pic, I put all 4 in the rear bank. I figure this would be a good test since majority of the heat is there. I also have 2 bad motor mounts which should give them a good test till I get time to replace them. I will try to update in a couple weeks to let everyone know how they are doing.

I bet there are no problems at all. Not many places the coil can even go cause lets face it, its attached to the spark plug and the boots will general stick to the valve cover after enough heat cycles.

I think you would have to flip the car over to get them to come out, or ramp a hill at 150 mph...?

How long have you been running all the coils?

I did some cross-referencing. If your test passes, BamSHO, then we can substitute RockAuto part# UF191, ULTRAPOWER coil for a '99 Cobra. (Long story, but a brand of '08 GT500 coils are offered for a '99 Cobra as well). They're a pittance, at $22.79 each.

The other 3 new coils just went in this past week. Been running the trial coil about a month now. Back to work starting Sunday night so will be running everyday. I wasnt sure about the older Cobras, I picked the GT500 due to it beening a blown car and prob would have more engine heat than our cars.

So these coils are for an 08 GT500 eh? I am in the process of replacing all 8 coils on my SHO as I have a not-constant misfire at idle and a 'dead zone' between 4200 and 4600 rpms. Auto Zone quoted me 90.99 for each coil for a 96 SHO. If I can get a coil for 22 bucks each, I dont care if I have to duct tape them on. I will go that route.

The V8 List guys go eBay all the time. They didn't think $30 was that good of a deal......

I tried the Ebay coils from China, didnt last 2 months, ended up running on used Motorcrafts I got from the boneyards. Right now Im into the 4 for $120. What got me really thinking is when I got to see James COP on his Gen1 couple years ago. Just now finally got my butt in gear to really try this. After looking at the new coils and the old one, cant figure out why so freakin much more, they only difference I see is the mounting holes. It cant cost that much more to make????

Here is the part number #140034. 1997-2008 4.6/5.4 modular 4 valve Direct Fire. When I first order the trial coil I picked out the GT500 to reference at the parts store.

I guess you aren't on the V8 mailing list.

I would say that 90%+ of folks have gotten eBay coils with great success, and the Wells (IIRC) coils have worked for them.

Sorry, I think that converting a car to COP is stupid. No appreciable gain, with 100% more maintenance issues. Those coils die. The V6-type coil lasts forever. On a DOHC with a central plug, any additional voltage to the plugs won't show a gain.

If I had a Gen 3 V8 (which would probably NEVER happen again) I would rather look at converting it BACK to one coil+plug wires to save the maintenance grief.

I have had a converted COP setup for over a year with zero issues on my 94. The coils I have came from a junkyard 100k+ mile Lincoln Mark VIII. I think...wait, I know it's been very efficient. The car is daily driven. For me, 100% less issues.

Anybody who suggests they would take a car with COP as a stock setup and revert back to plug wires and coil pack isn't thinking straight. Let alone for the reason of having less maintenance.

"100% less issues"??

Like what?

Never replaced a coil pack in any SHO I've owned, and good coil wires are less than any set of COPs.....

COPs are a great concept......that lose it in execution. Having the little coils in ahot, vibrating, possibly oily, environment is a recipe for disaster.

Getting a high-energy voltage for the spark is just not the issue it was 30+ years ago.

The correct e-bay coils aren't from China. I can't remember the sellers name off the top of my head, but I know they're located in Ontario CA and they've been selling the same coils through the same manufacter for about 4 years now.

I've got 4K+ on mine without any issues.

I have had zero issues with my COP. I had 2 coil packs go bad, and 3 sets of plug wires before COP. Like I said...zero issues.

OEM Motorcraft wiresets are close to $200. ACDelco plug wires are roughly $100. That's not including the coil pack. I can replace my entire COP ignition for under $90.
