about camshaft shims

to change the camshaft shims like it says in the 60k service, i just have to take off the valve covers or is there more to it?

To get to the shims, you need to take off the intake and then the valve covers. Once you are under the valve covers, you will need a tappet depressor, tappet holder, magnet/pick tool, and a feeler gauge.

You will use the the depressor to push the valve down. Next you will use the holder to hold the valve tappet down so that you may use a pick and magnet to extract the shim. To put the shim back in just reverse the procedure.

Oh make sure you use the feeler guage before you take out the shim. You just slip it in between the shim and the bottom of the cam(opposite from cam lobe) to measure. Always recheck your valve gapping after you replace your shims.
