The topic says it all. My a/c compressor must be bad because i refilled the r12 or at least tried to. I had some layin around so i tried to cycle the compressor. I checked the power at the connector and there was 12 some odd volts or the same as the battery so my assumption is that the compressor or the clutch is bad for that matter. My question is where can i get a cheap compressor? and is the compressor a special one or is it a regular taurus one?

Try tapping on the clutch using a broom handle with the a/c on. If it engages you need to adjust the clutch gap. Did you try jumping the low pressure cut off switch in case your freon pressure is too low for the compressor to engage?

And the compressor is SHO specific.

K- dawg- the clutch doesnt engage.

SHO driver- didnt try tapping it but i believe i did check the low pressure cut off, my father was helping me with this and we put a jumper between the connector to get around the switch and the clutch still didnt engage thats why we came to the conclusion that the clutch was bad.

92SHO16,

With the key on, engine off, jump the low pressure switch and try the following;

tap on the clutch face with a wood handle and see if the face gets pulled into the pulley, or

see if the clutch coil becomes a powerful magnet.

When the coil is activated it should become a magnet and draw the clutch face into the clutch surface of the pulley. If the coil becomes a magnet, but will not pull in the clutch face, then the "gap" is most likely out of specification.

If the coil does not become a magnet it is faulty and needs to be replaced. rangerj
